How to choose dog beds
How to measure your dog
A common mistake is buying dog beds that are too small. Measure your dog from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail and add up to 15 cm, advises the British maker Earthbound (Earthbound). A dog that sleeps fully stretched out may need up to 30 cm more than that length (PetsRadar). With bolstered beds, look at the inner area: the Knuffelwuff Nunavut measures 120 x 85 cm outside but only 85 x 55 cm inside.
Orthopedic beds for older dogs
When it comes to dog beds for arthritis, the recommendations come from arthritis organisations and vets; we didn't find studies on it. Canine Arthritis Resources and Education says a supportive memory foam mattress is ideal for dogs with arthritis (CARE). Canine Arthritis Management recommends a mattress that is supportive and conforms to the body, and adds that every dog has its own preferences (CAM). Vet Brian Faulkner, writing for Petplan, advises a soft, well-padded, open-sided bed in a warm spot that the dog can get into easily (Petplan). So a stiff dog is better off with a low entry or no bolsters.
Memory foam, egg-crate or shredded foam
Orthopedic dog beds most often use memory foam, which conforms to the body and is considered more durable, so it's best for heavier and older dogs. Egg-crate foam has a wavy surface, is cheaper and softer, but compresses faster. Shredded foam and fibre, as in donut dog beds, are comfortable but don't give even support. Thickness matters: the heavier the dog, the thicker the mattress should be, or it will feel the floor through a thin one. Neither makers nor vets give a minimum thickness.
Raised beds for summer
Raised dog beds on a metal frame keep the dog off the floor. WebMD says the space between the dog and the floor keeps things cool, so it recommends such beds for dogs with thick coats and those that overheat easily (WebMD). In winter it's the opposite: RSPCA Queensland advises raising the bed off cold, hard floors and away from drafts, as cold is especially hard on older dogs with stiff joints (RSPCA Qld).
Washing and hygiene
Dog beds need a cover that comes off and can be washed. The AKC says there are no hard and fast rules, but cites recommendations for weekly washing because of parasites, and a deep clean every two to three weeks against fleas (AKC). Fleas lay eggs mostly at night, so a bed can become infested quickly. Vet Medora Pashmakova of Texas A&M advises detergents without perfume or dye, and the bed should be kept clean and dry (Texas A&M). Watch the temperature: the covers in this comparison wash at 30 °C or cold, not at 60 °C.
A dog that chews its bed
Dogs Trust says destroying things, beds included, is often linked to boredom, anxiety or pain, and if a dog destroys things only when alone, it's separation-related behaviour (Dogs Trust). Swallowed pieces of foam and fabric can be dangerous, so if your dog has swallowed something, go to a vet straight away. WebMD advises beds with PVC or aluminium frames and canvas-like fabric for persistent chewers. The Coolaroo (steel frame, HDPE fabric) works the same way and has no foam to rip out, though Coolaroo doesn't market it as chew-resistant. Even K9 Ballistics, known for tough beds, promises its crate pad resists only mild chewing.
1. Knuffelwuff Nunavut
Photo: Knuffelwuff, Amazon
The Knuffelwuff Nunavut is an orthopedic bed with an 8 cm memory foam mattress and 25 cm high bolsters to rest a head on. The XXL size measures 120 x 85 cm outside, and the maker recommends it for Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Vizslas and Australian Shepherds. The corduroy cover comes off with a zip and washes at 30 °C, and the base is non-slip.
The bolsters take up a lot of room, so the inner area is only 85 x 55 cm. A dog that sleeps stretched out won't fit in a smaller size. The bed is developed in Germany and made in the EU, but Knuffelwuff doesn't publish the foam density. For a dog with severe arthritis, high bolsters can get in the way when climbing in.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Size | XXL 120 x 85 x 25 cm, inside 85 x 55 cm |
| Filling | memory foam 8 cm, bolsters foam flakes |
| Cover | corduroy, removable, 30 °C |
| Base | non-slip |
| Made | developed in Germany, made in the EU |
| Sizes | from S 70 x 50 to XXXL 150 x 105 cm |
| Price | 153.90 € |
Pros: real 8 cm memory foam, high bolsters for the head, washable cover, five sizes, made in the EU.
Cons: most expensive in this comparison, inner area much smaller than outside, washing only at 30 °C, foam density not published.
Our opinion: A big dog that likes to rest its head on the edge will feel like it's on a sofa in the Nunavut. If your dog sleeps stretched out, measure the inner area, not the outside.
2. Bedsure orthopedic sofa
Photo: Bedsure, Amazon
The Bedsure orthopedic sofa combines memory foam and egg-crate foam for 59.99 euros. It has bolsters on three sides for the head and neck, and a low entry at the front, which suits dogs with stiff joints. Under the cover is a water-resistant lining that protects the foam from accidents, and the base has rubber dots.
Bedsure gives no weight rating. For a large dog that sleeps stretched out, there's also a 122 x 89 x 20 cm version (84.99 euros). The corduroy and faux fur cover comes off and is machine washable, but the temperature isn't stated. Bedsure doesn't publish the thickness of the memory foam layer, nor a foam certificate.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Size | 106 x 76 x 18 cm |
| Filling | memory + egg-crate foam |
| Bolsters | three sides, low entry |
| Cover | corduroy with faux fur, washable |
| Protection | water-resistant inner lining |
| Base | non-slip, rubber dots |
| Price | 59.99 € |
Pros: memory foam for under 60 euros, water-resistant lining, low entry, washable cover.
Cons: memory foam thickness not published, wash temperature not stated, no foam certificate data.
Our opinion: This Bedsure sofa gives you memory foam, bolsters and a low entry for about 40 % of the Nunavut's price. For most medium and large dogs, it's the smarter buy.
3. Bedsure SupportMax Donut
Photo: Bedsure, Amazon
The Bedsure SupportMax Donut is a round bed 120 cm across with a raised rim that the dog curls up in like a nest. The filling is shredded foam with PP fibre, and the soft plush cover comes off with a zip. Underneath is an inner cover that protects the filling, and the base has non-slip dots.
The cover is washed cold on a gentle cycle and tumble-dried on low. Plush collects hair and dries slowly. Shredded foam isn't a true orthopedic mattress, so this isn't the best choice for an older dog with sore joints. After unpacking, the bed needs 24 to 48 hours to fully expand.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Size | Ø 120 x 22 cm |
| Filling | shredded foam + PP fibre |
| Cover | plush, removable, wash cold |
| Base | non-slip |
| Waterproof | no |
| Price | 59.39 € |
Pros: enclosed shape that curled-up sleepers love, washable cover, non-slip base, big enough for large dogs.
Cons: not a true orthopedic mattress, plush collects hair and dries slowly, not waterproof.
Our opinion: The donut is for dogs that sleep curled up and like to burrow. If your dog sleeps stretched out on its side, get a flat mattress.
4. Coolaroo Original
Photo: Coolaroo, Amazon
The Coolaroo Original is a raised bed on a powder-coated steel frame, with a surface of breathable HDPE fabric. The Large size measures 130 x 80 x 20 cm. Air flows under the dog, so it's good for hot summers and the patio, and the maker says the fabric resists fleas, mites and mould. It cleans by hosing down and dries quickly.
There's no soft padding, so some dogs need an extra cushion. A dog that struggles to step up 20 cm may find it awkward. Coolaroo doesn't state a weight limit, and replacement covers are sold separately.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Size | Large 130 x 80 x 20 cm |
| Frame | powder-coated steel |
| Surface | HDPE fabric, breathable |
| Cleaning | hose down |
| Use | indoors and outdoors |
| Weight limit | not stated |
| Price | 53.73 € |
Pros: air flows under the dog, hoses clean and dries fast, light and sturdy, no foam to rip out.
Cons: no soft padding, 20 cm step up for a stiff dog, weight limit not stated.
Our opinion: The Coolaroo is a summer bed for the patio and garden. It's also the better choice for a dog that chews, since there's no foam to pull out, though the maker doesn't claim it's chew-resistant.
5. Knuffelwuff Lucky
Photo: Knuffelwuff, Amazon
The Knuffelwuff Lucky is a bed of tough nylon that the maker describes as able to withstand a downpour. The XXL size measures 118 x 85 cm outside and 93 x 60 cm inside, and is meant for a Labrador, Dalmatian or Vizsla. The cover comes off and washes at 30 °C, and the base is non-slip.
Nylon wipes clean of mud and hair easily, so the bed is good for the patio, car or holiday home. The inner cushion has only about 2 cm of foam, so this isn't an orthopedic bed. It isn't fully waterproof for living outdoors permanently, and nylon feels colder than plush.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Size | XXL 118 x 85 x 12 cm, inside 93 x 60 cm |
| Material | nylon, water-resistant |
| Filling | foam sheet about 2 cm, bolsters foam flakes |
| Cover | removable, 30 °C |
| Use | indoors and outdoors |
| Made | in the EU |
| Price | 52.90 € |
Pros: nylon wipes clean, handles rain, light to carry, washable at 30 °C.
Cons: only 2 cm of foam, not orthopedic, not for permanent outdoor use, nylon feels colder.
Our opinion: You buy the Lucky for the dog that comes back from walks soaked to the belly. For an older dog sleeping indoors, get something with thicker foam.
6. lionto Memory Hundematte
Photo: lionto, Amazon
The lionto Memory Hundematte is a flat orthopedic memory foam mattress measuring 100 x 70 cm and 6 cm high. The cover is quilted faux leather that wipes clean with a damp cloth, so hair and mud don't stay in the fabric. It comes off with a zip, and the base has non-slip dots.
With no bolsters it's easy to step onto, which suits an older dog, and it also fits in a larger crate. For a dog of 30 kg or more, 6 cm is thin. Faux leather gets warm and sticky in summer, and a dog that scratches can damage the surface. Wash temperature and foam density aren't stated.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Size | 100 x 70 x 6 cm |
| Filling | memory foam |
| Cover | faux leather, wipe clean, removable |
| Base | non-slip dots |
| Bolsters | none |
| Price | 44.95 € |
Pros: wipes clean in seconds, memory foam at a good price, easy entry for an older dog, fits in a crate.
Cons: only 6 cm for heavier dogs, faux leather warm in summer, sensitive to scratching, no bolsters.
Our opinion: You can wipe the faux leather cover clean in half a minute, and that's the main reason to buy the lionto. For a heavy dog, get something thicker.
7. Bedsure Egg-Crate
Photo: Bedsure, Amazon
The Bedsure Egg-Crate is the cheapest large mattress in this comparison: 112 x 81 x 7.6 cm for 33.98 euros. The wavy egg-crate foam lets air through, and the large flat surface with no bolsters lets the dog stretch out. The sherpa cover comes off with an L-shaped zip along two sides, and the base is non-slip.
Egg-crate foam is softer than memory foam and sags faster, so heavy dogs may feel the floor over time. The cover is washed separately, gently and in cold water. There's no waterproof lining. It also works as a second mattress for a crate, car or upstairs room.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Size | 112 x 81 x 7.6 cm |
| Filling | egg-crate foam |
| Cover | sherpa, L-zip, wash cold |
| Base | non-slip |
| Bolsters | none |
| Price | 33.98 € |
Pros: lowest price, large lying area, light, washable cover.
Cons: egg-crate sags faster, 7.6 cm for heavy dogs, no waterproof lining, cold wash only.
Our opinion: For 34 euros this is a good second mattress or a first bed for a young dog. For an older dog, invest in memory foam.
Conclusion: which dog beds to choose?
For an older or large dog the best choice is the Knuffelwuff Nunavut at 153.90 euros, and if that's too much, the Bedsure orthopedic sofa at 59.99 euros gives memory foam and a low entry for under 40 % of the price. For summer and a dog that chews, get the raised Coolaroo. All the dog beds in this comparison have a cover that comes off or wipes clean, but before buying, measure your dog from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail and add up to 15 cm.

Frequently asked questions
What size dog bed do I need?
Measure your dog from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail and add up to 15 cm, or up to 30 cm if it sleeps stretched out. With bolstered beds, the inner area is what counts, not the outside dimensions. A 25 to 35 kg dog usually needs XL or XXL.
Does an older dog need an orthopedic bed?
CARE recommends a supportive memory foam mattress for dogs with arthritis, and Canine Arthritis Management a mattress that is supportive and conforms to the body. We didn't find studies on it. It also matters that the bed has a low entry, is in a warm spot and is out of drafts.
How often should I wash a dog bed?
There's no strict rule. The AKC cites recommendations for washing the cover weekly because of parasites, and a deep clean every two to three weeks if your dog has fleas. Use a detergent without perfume or dye and check the temperature on the label.
Which bed for a dog that chews?
A raised bed on a metal frame, like the Coolaroo, because there's no foam for the dog to pull out and swallow. Dogs Trust warns that chewing is often a sign of boredom, anxiety or pain, so the cause needs addressing, and if your dog has swallowed a piece of fabric, go to a vet straight away.
Bolstered bed or flat mattress?
Bolsters suit dogs that like to rest their head and feel protected. A flat mattress is better for dogs that sleep stretched out and for stiff dogs, for whom high bolsters make getting in harder.
Where should I put a dog bed?
In a warm, quiet spot out of drafts, away from doors and cold tiles. An older dog's bed should be raised off cold, hard floors, and in summer a raised bed helps the dog stay cool.
How we chose
The dog beds in this comparison were chosen by filling type and thickness, size for a 25 to 35 kg dog, cover and washing, base, bolsters and price. We compared 10 models available on Amazon.de and checked every ASIN through the Amazon API. The data comes from Knuffelwuff and Coolaroo pages and Amazon.de descriptions, and the advice on size, arthritis, washing and chewing from Earthbound, PetsRadar, CARE, Canine Arthritis Management, Petplan, WebMD, the AKC, Texas A&M and Dogs Trust. We found no chew-resistant bed for large dogs whose claims we could verify, so we didn't include one. Prices are live Amazon.de prices on 2 November 2026. We didn't physically test the beds.
