Dog houses on Amazon.de cost from 90.61 euros for a simple Kerbl wooden house to 239.20 euros for the Trixie natura Cottage L for large breeds. This guide is for owners of dogs that spend time in the yard but aren't sure what size to get, whether the house needs insulation for winter, and what the law in Croatia requires of them. The best dog houses of 2027 are the Trixie natura Classic as the most practical wooden house with a hinged roof (138.99 euros), the Kerbl 4-Seasons as the only one with factory insulation (176.19 euros) and the Ferplast Dogvilla 110 as a plastic house you can hose down (159.90 euros). We compared seven models with live prices on 2 November 2026.
The most common mistake is a house that's too big. The rule is simple: the house must be big enough for the dog to turn around and stretch out, and small enough for the dog to warm it with its own body heat.

How to choose dog houses
The right size
The dog must be able to stand, sit, lie down and turn around inside, but the house should be small enough for its body heat to warm it (MSPCA). A house that's too big is colder in winter. According to WebMD, the inner dimensions should be about 25% more than the dog's length from nose to flank, the roof no more than 50% above the dog's height, and the door doesn't need to be higher than three quarters of the shoulder height (WebMD). Measure your dog before buying and compare with the house's inner dimensions.
Wood or plastic
Wooden dog houses insulate better, look nicer in the yard and can be insulated further. Trixie recommends renewing the stain every 1 to 3 years with a non-toxic water-based finish. Plastic dog houses don't absorb moisture or smells and can be hosed down, but without insulation they're cold in winter. For dogs that live outside all year, wood with insulation is the better choice.
Winter
Dog houses need a floor raised a few centimetres off the ground, and straw makes better bedding than blankets or hay, which soak up moisture and can freeze (Humane World, PETA). Face the entrance away from the wind and protect it with a curtain or flap. Manufacturers such as Ferplast build in ventilation openings to keep the inside dry, so don't block them; protect the entrance instead. Almost all dog houses in this comparison stand on feet (the Ferplast Dogvilla doesn't), but only the Kerbl 4-Seasons has insulated walls.
What Croatian law says
Under Art. 51(4) of the Croatian Animal Protection Act (NN 102/17, 32/19, 78/24), it's forbidden to keep dogs permanently tied up or to keep them in an enclosure without letting them move freely outside it. Details such as chain length, house size and enclosure size are set by each city or municipality in its own decision (Art. 51(5)). The City of Zagreb, for example, requires a dog that lives in the yard to have a house where it can lie down, stand upright and turn around, and if the dog is kept in an enclosure at times, it must be at least 2 m² for dogs up to 20 kg or 4 m² for larger ones and at least a third covered (decision, Official Gazette of the City of Zagreb 28/18, City of Zagreb). The City of Opatija in its 2026 decision even sets house sizes by shoulder height: up to 55 cm a house of 100 x 60 x 55 cm, and from 65 cm up 170 to 180 x 120 x 85 cm.
Fleas and hygiene
About 95% of flea eggs, larvae and pupae are in the environment, not on the dog (RSPCA). So wash blankets and pads above 60 °C, as ESCCAP advises, change the straw regularly, and treat shaded spots such as the dog house rather than the whole yard (Merck Veterinary Manual). A hinged roof or removable floor makes a big difference: dog houses with those features are much quicker to clean, without crawling through the entrance.
1. Trixie natura Classic M-L
Photo: Trixie, Amazon
For most medium-sized dogs, such as a border collie, we'd get the Trixie natura Classic in size M-L. Outer dimensions are 104 x 72 x 68 cm, inner 93 x 55 x 57 cm, and the arched entrance is 32 x 43 cm. The roof is hinged, so you change bedding and clean the house without crawling through the entrance.
It's made of stained pine, and height-adjustable plastic feet keep the floor 8 to 10 cm off the ground. The walls are thin, about 1 cm, so for winter you need to buy Trixie's insulation insert and PVC door. It also comes in S-M and L sizes.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Outer size | 104 x 72 x 68 cm |
| Inner size | 93 x 55 x 57 cm |
| Entrance | 32 x 43 cm |
| Material | stained pine, wall about 1 cm |
| Roof | roofing felt, hinged |
| Floor | feet, 8-10 cm off the ground |
| Price | 138.99 € |
Pros: hinged roof for easy cleaning, adjustable feet, non-toxic stain, three sizes and accessories.
Cons: thin walls, insulation and door sold separately, no removable floor.
Our opinion: Of all the dog houses in this comparison, the Classic is the easiest to maintain day to day. For winter, buy the insulation insert straight away.
2. Kerbl 4-Seasons
Photo: Kerbl, Amazon
The Kerbl 4-Seasons is the only house in this comparison with factory insulation: double walls filled with polystyrene keep warmth in during winter and heat out in summer. A clear slat curtain at the entrance stops the wind. Outer dimensions are 100 x 83 x 94 cm, and the inner floor area is 77 x 65 cm.
The gable roof is covered with bitumen, and wooden feet with adjustable caps keep the floor off the ground. The roof doesn't open, so you clean through the entrance. Kerbl doesn't give the entrance size or inner height, which makes choosing the right size awkward.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Outer size | 100 x 83 x 94 cm |
| Inner floor | 77 x 65 cm |
| Insulation | double walls with polystyrene |
| Entrance | slat curtain, size not stated |
| Roof | gable, bitumen |
| Floor | raised, adjustable feet |
| Price | 176.19 € |
Pros: the only one with insulated walls, slat curtain included, raised floor, also keeps heat out.
Cons: entrance size and inner height not stated, roof doesn't open, pricier than a basic wooden house.
Our opinion: For dogs that sleep outside in winter in continental Croatia, the 4-Seasons is the best choice. Measure your dog and ask the seller for the entrance size before buying.
3. Ferplast Dogvilla 110
Photo: Ferplast, Amazon
The Ferplast Dogvilla 110 is a plastic house made of recycled thermoplastic that resists impact and UV. It doesn't absorb moisture or smells and can be hosed down, and the floor has drainage grooves. The roof comes off for cleaning, and a side wall opens out into a platform.
Inner dimensions are 95 x 66 x 68 cm, and the entrance is 30 x 46 cm with an aluminium edge against chewing. This offer includes a clear PVC slat door, while insulation panels are sold separately. Without them the plastic is cold in winter, and a 30 cm entrance is narrow for very large dogs.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Outer size | 111 x 84 x 79 cm |
| Inner size | 95 x 66 x 68 cm |
| Entrance | 30 x 46 cm, aluminium edge |
| Material | recycled thermoplastic |
| Floor | drainage grooves |
| Included | PVC slat door |
| Weight | 15.9 kg |
| Price | 159.90 € |
Pros: can be hosed down, doesn't absorb moisture or smells, tool-free assembly, PVC door included.
Cons: no insulation as standard, floor not on tall feet, narrow entrance for large dogs.
Our opinion: The Dogvilla is for owners who put hygiene first, for example if the dog often brings in mud or fleas. For winter, buy the insulation panels.
4. Trixie natura Cottage L
Photo: Trixie, Amazon
The Trixie natura Cottage L is a large house of solid pine for dogs the size of a golden retriever, up to about 43 kg according to Trixie. Outer dimensions are 96 x 105 x 112 cm, and the gable roof with overhang sheds rain. The floor is raised on adjustable feet, and the floor panels come out for cleaning.
The roof doesn't open. The house weighs about 32 kg and is the most expensive in this comparison. A high gable means more air for the dog to warm in winter, so a PVC door, which Trixie sells as an accessory, is useful for winter.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Outer size | 96 x 105 x 112 cm |
| For dogs | up to about 43 kg (Trixie) |
| Material | solid pine, stained |
| Roof | gable, bitumen felt, overhang |
| Floor | raised, removable panels |
| Weight | about 32 kg |
| Price | 239.20 € |
Pros: for large breeds, removable floor, roof with overhang, solid pine.
Cons: roof doesn't open, expensive and heavy, high gable is colder in winter.
Our opinion: The Cottage L is for big dogs that can't stretch out in smaller houses. For winter, add the door and a thick layer of straw.
5. Kerbl Overview
Photo: Kerbl, Amazon
The Kerbl Overview has the most inner space in this comparison: 114 x 75 cm with a height of 67 cm, from outer dimensions of 134 x 92 x 82 cm. The front is acrylic with two sliding windows, so the dog can see the yard, and in summer you open the windows for ventilation. The entrance is 33 x 50 cm, with a clear slat curtain.
The bitumen roof opens and locks in place, so cleaning is easy. Acrylic is colder than wood in winter, and an inner height of 67 cm is low for a dog that needs that much length. It takes up a lot of room in the yard.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Outer size | 134 x 92 x 82 cm |
| Inner size | 114 x 75 x 67 cm |
| Entrance | 33 x 50 cm, slat curtain |
| Front | acrylic, 2 sliding windows |
| Roof | bitumen, opens |
| Floor | adjustable feet |
| Price | 160.99 € |
Pros: most inner space, roof opens, sliding windows for summer, slat curtain included.
Cons: acrylic is colder in winter, low inner height, takes up a lot of room.
Our opinion: The Overview is for long dogs of medium height and owners who want the dog to see the yard. For winter, the Kerbl 4-Seasons is better.
6. PawHut with porch
Photo: PawHut, Amazon
The PawHut house has a covered 94 x 40 cm porch in front of the entrance, where the dog can lie in the shade and watch the yard. Overall dimensions are 103 x 107 x 83.5 cm, inner 94 x 55 x 71 cm, and the entrance is 43 cm wide with a weatherproof flap. The roof opens and the floor pulls out, so cleaning is very easy.
The manufacturer rates it for dogs up to 20 kg, such as a dachshund. It's made of fir and has no insulation. The feet are only 6 cm tall.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Overall size | 103 x 107 x 83.5 cm |
| Inner size | 94 x 55 x 71 cm |
| Entrance | 43 x 50 cm, flap |
| Porch | 94 x 40 cm, covered |
| Material | fir, hinged bitumen roof |
| Floor | pull-out, 6 cm feet |
| Price | 138.99 € |
Pros: covered porch, hinged roof and pull-out floor, wide entrance with flap.
Cons: only for dogs up to 20 kg, material without insulation, short feet.
Our opinion: The PawHut is for smaller dogs in warmer regions, where a porch matters more than insulation. For winter in continental Croatia it's not enough.
7. Kerbl with bitumen roof
Photo: Kerbl, Amazon
The Kerbl house with bitumen roof (82394) is the cheapest wooden house from a known maker in this comparison, at 90.61 euros. Outer dimensions are 85 x 73 x 80 cm, the wood is stained with a protective finish, and the gable roof is covered with bitumen. Height-adjustable wooden feet keep the floor off the ground.
There's no insulation or entrance curtain, and the roof doesn't open. Kerbl doesn't publish the inner dimensions or entrance size, so ask the seller for them before buying. There's also a larger 100 x 88 x 99 cm version (82395).
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Outer size | 85 x 73 x 80 cm |
| Inner size and entrance | not stated |
| Material | stained wood |
| Roof | gable, bitumen |
| Floor | adjustable wooden feet |
| Price | 90.61 € |
Pros: lowest price, known maker, raised floor, two sizes.
Cons: no insulation or curtain, roof doesn't open, inner dimensions not published.
Our opinion: For a smaller dog in a mild climate, the Kerbl 82394 is enough. Add a curtain to the entrance and straw for winter.
Conclusion: which dog houses to choose?
For most medium-sized dogs, the best choice is the Trixie natura Classic at 138.99 euros, for its hinged roof and raised floor. For winter outdoors get the insulated Kerbl 4-Seasons, and for easy washing the plastic Ferplast Dogvilla. Whichever of these dog houses you buy, check your city's rules on keeping dogs and don't keep your dog permanently chained.

Frequently asked questions
What size dog house should I choose?
The dog must be able to stand, turn around and lie stretched out, but the house mustn't be too big, because it's colder in winter. The inner dimensions should be about 25% more than the dog's length without the tail, and the door doesn't need to be higher than three quarters of the shoulder height.
Wooden or plastic dog house?
Wood insulates better and can be insulated further, so it's better for dogs that live outside all year. Plastic can be hosed down and doesn't absorb moisture or smells, but without insulation panels it's cold in winter.
How do I prepare a dog house for winter?
Raise the floor off the ground, use straw rather than blankets or hay as bedding, and face the entrance away from the wind with a curtain over it. Don't block the ventilation openings. Best of all, insulate the walls or buy an insulated house.
Can a dog be kept on a chain in Croatia?
Under the Animal Protection Act (Art. 51(4)), it's forbidden to keep dogs permanently tied up. Cities and municipalities set when and how tying is allowed, for example the minimum chain length and enclosure size, so check your city's decision.
How do I clean a dog house?
Change the bedding regularly and wash blankets and pads above 60 °C. Clean the house when you bathe the dog. A hinged roof or removable floor makes the job much easier, and a wooden house should get a non-toxic stain every 1 to 3 years.
How do I keep fleas out of the dog house?
Most developing fleas live in the environment, not on the dog. Wash blankets at a high temperature and change the straw regularly, treat the house and shaded spots where the dog lies, and protect the dog with a flea treatment on your vet's advice.
How we chose
We chose dog houses based on inner dimensions and dog size, material, insulation, raised floor, cleaning and price. We looked at 10 models available on Amazon.de and checked every ASIN through the Amazon API. The data comes from the Trixie, Kerbl and Ferplast websites, Amazon.de descriptions and retailer zooplus's specifications, and the advice on size, winter and hygiene from the MSPCA, WebMD, Humane World, the RSPCA and the Merck Veterinary Manual. The Petmate Indigo isn't included because it's not sold on Amazon.de. Prices are live Amazon.de prices on 2 November 2026. We didn't physically test the products.
