How to choose an infrared sauna

Number of people and size

A one-person cabin takes up about 90 x 90 cm, a two-person one about 120 x 105 cm, and a cabin for three or four 140 x 140 to 150 x 150 cm. Height is 190-200 cm, so the room must be a little taller. Also measure the doors you will carry the panels through. Corner models such as the Artsauna Malmö 140 use a corner that would otherwise stay empty.

Heater type

Infrared saunas use three types of heater. Ceramic heaters are point sources that warm the air quickly, but the heat is less even. Carbon and panel heaters radiate from a larger surface and more gently. Full spectrum heaters radiate across several infrared ranges. Six of the seven cabins in our selection have full spectrum heaters; the Nyborg S120K has ceramic ones.

Power connection

The cabins in our selection run on 230 V. Artsauna says its models plug into a normal household socket with no special installation. Home Deluxe explicitly recommends a separate fused circuit for the Sahara XXL, because otherwise the residual current breaker may trip. A single 16 A circuit carries at most 3,680 W (230 V x 16 A), so with a 2,500 W cabin there should be no other large appliances on the same circuit. If in doubt, have an electrician check your wiring.

Wood and equipment

All seven cabins are made of hemlock (Canadian hemlock), and Home Deluxe stresses that the wood on its model is free of resin and knots. Typical equipment includes coloured LED light (chromotherapy), radio and Bluetooth, safety glass doors and, on some models, an ioniser. A control panel is standard, the Göteborg 90 and Calgary highlight a timer, and the Dewello Calgary has controls both inside and outside.

Assembly

Cabins arrive as panels joined with clips or screws. Artsauna gives about 30 minutes of assembly for the Kiruna and 30-60 minutes for the Nyborg. Larger cabins need two people, because the Artsauna Malmö 140 weighs 211 kg and the Dewello Kenora 160 about 280 kg.

Infrared or Finnish sauna?

A Finnish sauna heats the air, usually to 66-91 °C. An infrared cabin heats the body with radiation, so it runs cooler. According to Cleveland Clinic that is 43-57 °C, and Artsauna limits its cabins to a maximum of 65 °C. Infrared saunas usually heat up faster and need no stove with stones, and some people find the lower temperature easier to tolerate. They do not, however, give the Finnish feeling of heat or the chance to pour water on stones.

1. Artsauna Kiruna 120

Check on Amazon

The Artsauna Kiruna 120 is our pick for most couples. For 1,099.00 euros you get two types of heater: five full spectrum heaters and three panel heaters, 2,040 W in total. Artsauna states dimensions of 120 x 105 x 190 cm and a maximum temperature of 65 °C.

The cabin has an 8 mm safety glass door, coloured LED light, a radio with Bluetooth and USB, an ioniser and a soft-touch control panel. It plugs into a normal socket. According to the manufacturer, assembly takes about 30 minutes. The bench is 46 cm deep, enough for sitting but not for lying down.

Power 2,040 W
Size 120 x 105 x 190 cm
Maximum temperature 65 °C
Wood hemlock
Equipment LED light, radio, Bluetooth, USB, ioniser
Connection 230 V, normal socket

Pros: two heater types for more even heat, eight heaters at this price, quick assembly, plugs into a normal socket.

Cons: 2,040 W uses more than simpler models, 46 cm bench depth, weight not published.

Our opinion: For two people in a flat or house, this is the most sensible balance of price and equipment. Measure the space before ordering, including ceiling height.

2. Artsauna Göteborg 90

Check on Amazon

The Artsauna Göteborg 90 is the cheapest cabin in this comparison: 799.99 euros. It is for one person and fits on 90 x 90 cm. It has four full spectrum heaters totalling 1,450 W: two for the back, one for the calves and one at the front.

The front is 8 mm safety glass and the entrance is at the side. Artsauna states a maximum temperature of 65 °C, a timer of up to 60 minutes, LED light in seven colours, and radio and Bluetooth. It plugs into a normal socket.

Size 90 x 90 x 190 cm

Pros: lowest price, fits on 90 x 90 cm, lowest power and energy use in the comparison, normal socket.

Cons: one person only, only four heaters, weight not published.

Our opinion: If you use the sauna alone and don't have much space, this is the cheapest way into infrared saunas. For two it is too cramped.

3. Artsauna Nyborg S120K

Check on Amazon

The Artsauna Nyborg S120K is the cheapest two-person cabin in this comparison: 999.00 euros. Instead of full spectrum heaters it has five ceramic heaters and one floor panel heater, 1,930 W in total. Ceramic heaters warm the air quickly, but the heat is more localised than with panel heaters.

Its dimensions are the same as the Kiruna's, 120 x 105 x 190 cm, and the maximum temperature is 65 °C. Artsauna lists radio, Bluetooth, USB, two speakers, coloured LED light, an ioniser and 8 mm safety glass. Click-together assembly takes 30-60 minutes.

Feature Detail
People 2
Heaters 5 ceramic + 1 floor panel
Power 1,930 W
Size 120 x 105 x 190 cm
Maximum temperature 65 °C
Equipment radio, Bluetooth, USB, LED light, ioniser

Price 999.00 €

Pros: lowest price for two people, floor heater for the feet, quick assembly.

Cons: ceramic heaters heat less evenly, no full spectrum heaters, weight not published.

Our opinion: For 100 euros less than the Kiruna you get the same size and similar equipment, but simpler heaters. If the budget is tight, it is a good substitute.

4. Dewello Calgary 115x105

Check on Amazon

The Dewello Calgary is a cabin for one or two people with five full spectrum heaters totalling 1,600 W. Its special feature is a dual control unit: you can switch the sauna on from outside and let it warm up before you go in, then change the temperature and timer from inside.

Dewello lists a 156 x 48 cm glass door, coloured LED light, Bluetooth, FM radio and USB, an ioniser with aromatherapy and a ventilation opening. The manufacturer does not publish the maximum temperature or weight. At 115 cm wide, the cabin is tight for two adults.

Feature Detail

Power 1,600 W
Size 115 x 105 x 190 cm
Controls inside and outside, timer
Equipment LED light, Bluetooth, FM, USB, ioniser with aromatherapy
Price 1,399.00 €

Pros: controls inside and outside, full spectrum heaters, ioniser with aromatherapy.

Cons: pricier than similar Artsauna models, tight for two, maximum temperature and weight not published.

Our opinion: You pay for convenient controls. If you mostly use the sauna alone and occasionally with a partner, the Calgary is a good middle choice.

5. Artsauna Malmö 140

Check on Amazon

The Artsauna Malmö 140 is a corner cabin for three people. It is pentagonal with the entrance on the corner, so it fills a corner of the room that would otherwise go unused. It has five full spectrum and three panel heaters totalling 2,530 W, and the rear heaters are adjustable.

Artsauna states outer dimensions of 140 x 140 x 190 cm, inner dimensions of 134 x 134 x 180 cm, a 43 cm seat height and a maximum temperature of 65 °C. It weighs 211 kg. It has coloured LED light, Bluetooth speakers and aromatherapy, and plugs into a normal socket.

Feature Detail
People 3
Shape corner, pentagonal

Power 2,530 W
Size 140 x 140 x 190 cm
Maximum temperature 65 °C
Weight 211 kg
Price 2,399.00 €

Pros: corner shape saves space, adjustable rear heaters, room for three.

Cons: expensive for three people, needs a free corner, 211 kg.

Our opinion: If the only free spot in the room is a corner, this is the model that fits there. For the same money, rectangular cabins offer more space.

6. Home Deluxe Sahara XXL

Check on Amazon

The Home Deluxe Sahara XXL is the family cabin. The manufacturer rates it for four people, the Amazon listing for two to three. It has eight full spectrum heaters (six for the back, one for the calves and one on the side) and a carbon floor heater, 2,550 W in total. For its size, the price of 1,949.00 euros is lower than the Artsauna Malmö 140.

It measures 150 x 150 x 200 cm, so the room must be taller than two metres. The entrance is about 53 cm wide with a 15.5 cm threshold. The cabin has a radio, colour therapy with a remote and a temperature sensor. Home Deluxe strongly recommends a separate fused circuit.

Feature Detail
People up to 4 (manufacturer)
Heaters 8 full spectrum + 1 carbon floor
Power 2,550 W
Size 150 x 150 x 200 cm
Entrance about 53 cm, 15.5 cm threshold
Equipment radio, colour therapy, temperature sensor
Connection 230 V, separate circuit recommended
Price 1,949.00 €

Pros: room for a family under 2,000 euros, floor heater for the feet, nine heaters.

Cons: needs a separate circuit, 15.5 cm threshold, 200 cm height needs a taller room.

Our opinion: For a family that wants to use the sauna together, this is the most space for the money. Call the electrician before delivery, not after.

7. Dewello Kenora 160

Check on Amazon

The Dewello Kenora 160 is the premium cabin in this comparison. It has seven 300 W full spectrum heaters and three carbon panel heaters, 2,840 W in total, the most in our selection. The front and side walls are glass, and the bench is about 149 cm long.

Dewello states dimensions of 160 x 120 x 190 cm and two to three people. Equipment includes LED colour therapy, Bluetooth, FM and USB, an ioniser with aromatherapy and ozone disinfection. It weighs about 280 kg. The manufacturer does not publish the maximum temperature.

Feature Detail
People 2-3
Heaters 7 full spectrum + 3 carbon
Power 2,840 W
Size 160 x 120 x 190 cm
Bench about 149 cm
Equipment LED, Bluetooth, FM, USB, ioniser, ozone
Weight about 280 kg
Price 2,999.00 €

Pros: highest heater power in the comparison, glass walls, long bench, extensive equipment.

Cons: most expensive in the comparison, about 280 kg, highest electricity use.

Our opinion: This cabin looks like a piece of furniture. Plan a check of the circuit too, because 2,840 W leaves little headroom on a 16 A circuit.

Health and safety

Evidence for the health benefits of infrared saunas is limited so far. A 2009 review in Canadian Family Physician found limited moderate-quality evidence for normalising blood pressure and for heart failure, and consistent evidence against the claim that infrared saunas lower cholesterol. The well-known Finnish study of 2,300 men followed for 20 years concerns the Finnish sauna, not infrared.

According to a review in the American Journal of Medicine, saunas are not for people with unstable angina, a recent heart attack or severe aortic stenosis, and alcohol in the sauna raises the risk of low blood pressure and arrhythmia. Cleveland Clinic advises avoiding infrared saunas with multiple sclerosis, fever and infection. Sources differ on pregnancy, so pregnant women should ask a doctor first. Harvard Health advises people with heart disease and uncontrolled blood pressure to talk to a doctor, and everyone to stay no more than 15-20 minutes, cool down gradually and drink plenty of fluids.

With the cabin itself, mind the electrics. The safety of sauna heaters and infrared cabins up to 20 kW is covered by the EN 60335-2-53 standard. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the power connection.

Electricity use

Energy use is power times time. The Göteborg 90 at 1,450 W uses about 1.09 kWh in 45 minutes at full power, and the Kenora 160 at 2,840 W about 2.13 kWh. A 2,040 W cabin such as the Kiruna uses about 1 kWh in half an hour. The thermostat switches the heaters off now and then, so real consumption is usually lower. To work out the cost, multiply the kWh by the price per kilowatt-hour on your electricity bill.

Conclusion: which infrared saunas to choose?

For most couples the best choice is the Artsauna Kiruna 120 at 1,099.00 euros, with two heater types and a normal-socket connection. For one person and a small space, the Göteborg 90 is the cheapest, and for a family the Home Deluxe Sahara XXL with a separate circuit. The infrared saunas for special spaces are the corner Malmö 140, and for those who want a premium look the Dewello Kenora 160.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between infrared and Finnish saunas?

A Finnish sauna heats the air, usually to 66-91 °C, while an infrared cabin heats the body with radiation and runs at 43-57 °C. The manufacturers of the cabins in our selection limit them to a maximum of 65 °C. Infrared usually heats up faster but lacks the Finnish feeling of heat and pouring water on stones.

How much electricity do infrared saunas use?

Energy use is power times time. A 1,450 W cabin uses about 1.1 kWh in 45 minutes at full power, and a 2,840 W cabin about 2.1 kWh. The thermostat switches the heaters off now and then, so real consumption is usually lower.

Is an infrared sauna healthy, and who should not use one?

Evidence of benefits is limited. With unstable angina, a recent heart attack or severe aortic stenosis, a sauna is not recommended. People with heart disease or uncontrolled blood pressure, pregnant women and people with multiple sclerosis should ask a doctor first. Skip the sauna with a fever or infection, and avoid alcohol because it raises the risk of low blood pressure.

How long and how often should you use an infrared sauna?

Cleveland Clinic advises beginners to start with 5-10 minutes at about 43 °C, and even experienced users to keep sessions to 20-30 minutes. For saunas in general, Harvard Health gives a maximum of 15-20 minutes, gradual cooling and plenty of fluids afterwards. The Finnish study found better results with 2-7 sessions a week, but in a Finnish sauna, not an infrared one.

Can an infrared cabin be plugged into a normal socket?

Most cabins run on 230 V. Artsauna says they plug into a normal socket, while Home Deluxe recommends a separate fused circuit for the Sahara XXL. A 16 A circuit carries at most 3,680 W, so with a more powerful cabin there should be no other large appliances on it.

How much space do infrared saunas need at home?

A one-person cabin takes up about 90 x 90 cm, a two-person one about 120 x 105 cm, and a cabin for 3-4 people 140 x 140 to 150 x 150 cm. Height is 190-200 cm, so the room should be a little taller. Corner models use a free corner of the room.

How we tested

For this comparison we chose infrared saunas by number of people, heater type and power, power connection, equipment and price. We reviewed 10 cabins available on Amazon.de and checked every ASIN through Amazon's API. Specifications come from the Artsauna, Dewello and Home Deluxe websites. Where a figure is not published, we say so; for most models Artsauna's website lists an obviously wrong weight, so we did not use it. We left out the Artsauna Helsinki 150 (1,799.00 euros), the Sanotechnik Malmö 2 (1,374.00 euros), because the heater data from the manufacturer and the listing don't match, and the Home Deluxe Everest S combination sauna (1,999.00 euros) with a 3.6 kW Finnish stove. Health information comes from Cleveland Clinic, Harvard Health and peer-reviewed reviews. Prices are live Amazon.de prices from 30 October 2026. We did not physically test the cabins. This article is not medical advice.
