Mattresses in 140x200 cm on Amazon.de cost from 89.95 euros for the BettenABC KSP-500 to 459.00 euros for the Ravensberger Komfort-SAN, winner of the German consumer organisation Stiftung Warentest's test in March 2025. This guide is for anyone replacing an old mattress who isn't sure whether they need H2 or H3, foam or springs, and what to do if the mattress doesn't suit them. The best mattresses of 2027 are the Ravensberger Komfort-SAN as the best cold foam mattress (459.00 euros), the BMM Komfort 23 as the best value (319.99 euros) and the MSS Medic as the most affordable pocket spring mattress (174.99 euros). We compared seven models with live prices on 2 November 2026.
Two things most buyers don't know: H2 and H3 firmness labels aren't reliable, and a mattress bought online can be returned even after you've removed the plastic.

How to choose mattresses
Why H2 and H3 labels mislead
Stiftung Warentest writes that you can't rely on declared firmness: of eight mattresses labelled H3, the lab measured four as soft, three as medium and one as firm (Stiftung Warentest). A standard exists, but manufacturers still declare firmness at their own discretion. In its guide, Stiftung Warentest also writes that firmness doesn't affect how well you lie and that a soft mattress can support the spine just as well (Stiftung Warentest). So treat weight tables as a rough guide: Ravensberger recommends H3 from about 80 kg, while BMM gives H3 up to 120 kg.
Sleeping position
When you sleep on your side, the spine should lie as straight as possible, so above all the shoulder needs to be able to sink in deeper. On your back, the spine should keep its natural double S shape (Stiftung Warentest). Zones at the shoulders and pelvis help in both positions. If you share a bed and your partner is much heavier or lighter, consider two 70 or 80 cm mattresses instead of one 140 cm mattress.
Mattresses for back pain
In a randomised trial published in The Lancet, 313 people with chronic lower back pain slept for 90 days on a firm or a medium-firm mattress, and the medium-firm one reduced pain and disability more (Kovacs et al., 2003). A 2021 review reached a similar conclusion: medium-firm mattresses promote comfort, sleep quality and spinal alignment (Caggiari et al.). So a very firm mattress isn't automatically the right choice for a bad back. If the pain doesn't go away, see a doctor or physiotherapist.
Foam or springs
Cold foam mattresses follow the body closely and pass little movement to your partner, and the density (RG) gives a hint of how long they'll last. Memory foam reacts to heat and weight and relieves shoulders and hips well, but some people find it warm. Pocket spring mattresses breathe better, so they're good for people who sweat at night. Hybrid mattresses combine springs and foam layers.
Smell, lifespan and returns
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 means the textile has been tested for harmful substances, but it says nothing about smell or volatile compounds from the foam (OEKO-TEX). So air a new mattress for a few days; Lidl advises about 72 hours for the Emma Original Lite. The Sleep Foundation recommends replacing a mattress every 6 to 8 years (Sleep Foundation). Important for online purchases: in case C-681/17 the EU Court ruled that a mattress can be returned within 14 days even after the protective film has been removed, and Amazon.de offers 30-day returns on mattresses.
1. Ravensberger Komfort-SAN
Photo: Ravensberger, Amazon
The Ravensberger Komfort-SAN won Stiftung Warentest's mattress test in March 2025 with a grade of 2.2, according to the manufacturer. Its core is cold foam with a density of RG 50, a very high figure, with 7 zones and a cube cut that lets the shoulder and pelvis sink deeper. Ravensberger recommends H3 from about 80 kg and H4 from about 110 kg.
The cotton and polyester cover zips off and washes at 60 °C, and the whole mattress has OEKO-TEX class 1 certification. At 18 cm it's lower than some cheaper models. The test was done on the firmer H4 version, not the H3 we suggest here.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Core | cold foam RG 50, 7 zones |
| Height | about 18 cm |
| Firmness | H3 (from about 80 kg, Ravensberger) |
| Cover | removable, washable at 60 °C |
| Certification | OEKO-TEX Standard 100, class 1 |
| Test | Stiftung Warentest 03/2025, grade 2.2 (H4) |
| Price | 459.00 € |
Pros: very dense foam for a long life, test winner, clear firmness table, cover washable at 60 °C.
Cons: most expensive in this comparison, only 18 cm, test done on the H4 version.
Our opinion: Of all the mattresses in this comparison, the Komfort-SAN has the best documented quality. If your budget stretches to 459 euros, it's a safe buy for many years.
2. BMM Komfort 23
Photo: BMM, Amazon
The BMM Komfort 23 gives you the most mattress for the money: 23 cm high, RG 35 cold foam with 7 zones and an extra shoulder zone, for 319.99 euros. For H3 BMM recommends up to 120 kg, and there's also an H4 up to 150 kg. It's certified by OEKO-TEX and CertiPUR.
The cover with a climate band zips off on four sides and has handles for turning. On the Amazon listing BMM offers up to 100 nights' trial. The RG 35 density is lower than the Ravensberger's, and the warranty isn't clearly stated on the listing.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Core | cold foam RG 35, 7 zones + shoulder |
| Height | 23 cm |
| Firmness | H3 up to 120 kg (BMM) |
| Cover | removable, handles, washable up to 60 °C |

| Price | 319.99 € |
Pros: tall mattress for a reasonable price, clear weight guidance, two certifications, up to 100 nights' trial.
Cons: foam density lower than the Ravensberger, warranty not clearly stated.
Our opinion: For most people who don't want to spend 450 euros, we'd recommend the Komfort 23. The trial period on Amazon lowers the risk further.
3. bett1 Bodyguard
Photo: bett1, Amazon
The bett1 Bodyguard is a mattress with two sides of different firmness: if one doesn't suit you, you flip it. The core is cold foam, about 18.5 cm high, and the cover washes at 60 °C and has OEKO-TEX class 1. Ergonomic modules follow the head, shoulders, lower back and pelvis.
On Amazon.de, the 140x200 size is only available as the softer "Weich" version, with a soft and a slightly firmer side; the medium-firm version comes only in 140x190. bett1 says the soft version is for people who like sleeping soft. The 100-night trial applies when buying directly from bett1, and bett1 also gives a 10-year warranty on the core.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Core | cold foam, two sides |
| Height | about 18.5 cm |
| Firmness | soft and firmer side (Weich version) |
| Cover | washable at 60 °C |
| Certification | OEKO-TEX Standard 100, class 1 |
| Price | 369.00 € |
Pros: two firmnesses in one mattress, cover washable at 60 °C, OEKO-TEX class 1.
Cons: only the softer version in 140x200 on Amazon, lower profile, 100-night trial only with bett1.
Our opinion: The Bodyguard is good for people who like a softer bed but aren't sure how soft. If you need medium-firm, buy it directly from bett1.
4. Ravensberger Ravo-Spring
Photo: Ravensberger, Amazon
The Ravensberger Ravo-Spring is a mattress with barrel-shaped pocket springs, about 500 per 2 m², in 7 zones, with thin foam layers on top and bottom. It's about 22 cm high. In October 2025 Stiftung Warentest rated it 2.5 ("good"), the best of the newly tested spring mattresses, according to the manufacturer.
The springs breathe well, so it's a good choice for people who sweat at night. The cover washes at 60 °C, and it's OEKO-TEX class 1 certified. Weight data for H3 conflicts: Ravensberger says from about 80 kg, Amazon says up to 110 kg. It's expensive for a spring mattress.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Core | barrel pocket springs, about 500/2 m², 7 zones |
| Height | about 22 cm |
| Firmness | H3 |
| Cover | washable at 60 °C |
| Certification | OEKO-TEX Standard 100, class 1 |
| Test | Stiftung Warentest 10/2025, grade 2.5 |
| Price | 449.00 € |
Pros: good breathability, tested by Stiftung Warentest, cover washable at 60 °C, OEKO-TEX class 1.
Cons: expensive for a spring mattress, conflicting weight data, few Amazon reviews.
Our opinion: The Ravo-Spring is for people who find foam mattresses too warm. For the same price, the Komfort-SAN is the better choice if heat doesn't bother you.
5. Emma One+
Photo: Emma, Amazon
The Emma One+ has three foam layers, breathable Airgocell, a memory layer and a support layer, with three zones for shoulders, back and hips. It's 18 cm high, and the firmness is H2, which Emma describes as medium. The memory layer relieves shoulders and hips well, so it suits side sleepers. On Amazon it's rated 4.5 out of 5 from 228 reviews.
The cover washes only at 40 °C, and there are three zones, fewer than the competition. Emma offers a 100-night trial and up to 10 years' warranty, but on Amazon the 30-day Amazon return applies. Lidl advises airing the Emma Original Lite for about 72 hours after unpacking.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Core | Airgocell + memory + support foam, 3 zones |
| Height | 18 cm |
| Firmness | H2 (medium, Emma) |
| Cover | washable at 40 °C |
| Returns | 30 days on Amazon |
| Rating | 4.5/5 (228 reviews) |
| Price | 330.00 € |
Pros: memory layer for shoulders and hips, well-known brand, good customer ratings.
Cons: only 18 cm and 3 zones, cover at 40 °C, 100-night trial only when buying from Emma.
Our opinion: The Emma One+ is for side sleepers who like a sinking feel. For heavier people, taller mattresses with 7 zones are better.
6. MSS Medic
Photo: MSS, Amazon
The MSS Medic is the most affordable pocket spring mattress in this comparison, made in Germany, at 174.99 euros. It has about 550 springs per 2 m² in 7 zones and a comfort foam layer, and stands 20 cm high. On Amazon it's rated 4.3 out of 5 from about 1,700 reviews.
The microfibre cover zips off on four sides and washes at 60 °C, and the mattress is OEKO-TEX certified. MSS doesn't give a recommended weight for H3 or a warranty. The cover is simpler than on pricier models.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Core | pocket springs, about 550/2 m², 7 zones |
| Height | 20 cm |
| Firmness | H3, weight not stated |
| Cover | microfibre, washable at 60 °C |
| Certification | OEKO-TEX |
| Rating | 4.3/5 (about 1,700 reviews) |
| Price | 174.99 € |
Pros: cheapest spring mattress in the selection, made in Germany, lots of reviews, cover washable at 60 °C.
Cons: weight guidance and warranty not stated, simple cover.
Our opinion: The Medic is a good choice for people who want springs and breathability without paying 450 euros. The large number of reviews, about 1,700, points to solid build quality.
7. BettenABC KSP-500
Photo: BettenABC, Amazon
The BettenABC KSP-500 is the cheapest mattress in this comparison, at 89.95 euros in 140x200 cm. The core is cold foam with 7 zones and cross cuts for airflow, and the H3 is for 70 to 120 kg according to the manufacturer. It arrives rolled and is usable after a few hours.
It's only 16 cm high, and the foam density isn't stated. The cover washes at 60 °C and has OEKO-TEX class 1. The Amazon listing offers a 30-day trial with free returns.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Core | cold foam, 7 zones, RG not stated |
| Height | 16 cm |
| Firmness | H3 for 70-120 kg |
| Cover | washable up to 60 °C |
| Certification | OEKO-TEX Standard 100, class 1 |
| Delivery | rolled |
| Price | 89.95 € |
Pros: lowest price, clear weight guidance, cover washable at 60 °C, OEKO-TEX class 1.
Cons: only 16 cm, foam density not stated, less suitable as the main mattress for heavier people.
Our opinion: The KSP-500 is a good mattress for a guest room or child's room. For an adult's everyday bed, add about 85 euros for the MSS Medic or about 230 euros for the BMM Komfort 23.
Conclusion: which mattresses to choose?
For most buyers the best choice is the BMM Komfort 23 at 319.99 euros, and if the budget allows, the Ravensberger Komfort-SAN as the test winner. For springs on less money there's the MSS Medic, and for a guest room the BettenABC KSP-500. All mattresses in this comparison bought online can be returned, so test a new mattress thoroughly within the return period (14 days by law, 30 days on Amazon.de).
| If you care most about | Choose | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Best documented quality | Ravensberger Komfort-SAN | 459.00 € |
| Value | BMM Komfort 23 | 319.99 € |
| Two firmnesses, softer sleep | bett1 Bodyguard | 369.00 € |
| Breathability, sweating | Ravensberger Ravo-Spring | 449.00 € |
| Side sleeping, memory foam | Emma One+ | 330.00 € |
| Springs on a budget | MSS Medic | 174.99 € |
| Guest room | BettenABC KSP-500 | 89.95 € |
With a new mattress, also look at ergonomic pillows and gadgets for better sleep. If noise wakes you, there are earplugs for sleeping, and for cold evenings heating pads.
Frequently asked questions
Which mattress firmness, H2 or H3?
The labels aren't reliable because manufacturers set them themselves, so check the specific manufacturer's table. Roughly, lighter people and side sleepers choose softer, heavier people firmer. It's best to try the mattress at home and use your right to return.
Foam or springs?
Cold foam follows the body and passes on little movement, and memory foam relieves shoulders and hips. Pocket springs breathe better and suit people who sweat at night. Foam density or spring count matters more for quality than the type itself.
Which mattress for back pain?
A study in The Lancet showed a medium-firm mattress reduces chronic lower back pain more than a firm one. A very firm mattress isn't automatically the right choice. If the pain persists, see a doctor or physiotherapist.
How long does a mattress last?
The Sleep Foundation recommends replacing it every 6 to 8 years. Signs it's time are sagging, morning stiffness and worse allergies. Mattresses with denser foam or better springs last longer.
Can I return a mattress bought online?
Yes. Under EU Court ruling C-681/17, a mattress can be returned within 14 days even after removing the protective film. Amazon.de offers 30-day returns on mattresses, and some manufacturers offer longer trial periods.
Why does a new mattress smell, and how long does it take to expand?
New foam gives off a smell and volatile compounds, so air the mattress for a few days with the window open. A rolled mattress takes anywhere from a few hours to two or three days to fully expand depending on the model, and OEKO-TEX certification says nothing about smell.
How we chose
We chose mattresses based on core type and density, number of zones, height, cover, certifications, Stiftung Warentest results and price, all in 140x200 cm. We looked at 10 models available on Amazon.de and checked every ASIN through the Amazon API. The data comes from the Ravensberger and bett1 websites, Amazon.de descriptions and Stiftung Warentest, and the advice on firmness, backs and care from studies and the Sleep Foundation. We left out models with no 140x200 size on Amazon.de or that cost much more. Prices are live Amazon.de prices on 2 November 2026. We didn't physically test the mattresses.
