How to choose punching bags

Hanging or free-standing

A hanging bag gives more realistic resistance and in our comparison is usually cheaper, but needs a solid ceiling, beam, wall or stand. A free-standing bag has a base filled with water or sand, needs no drilling and is easy to move, but can shift on a smooth floor under hard hits. For a flat where you can't drill the ceiling, free-standing punching bags or a bag stand are the simplest option.

Bag weight

A common rule of thumb, also cited by Hayabusa, is a bag of about half your body weight: a 72 kg person suits a bag of about 36 kg (Hayabusa). Lighter punching bags are better for speed, heavier ones for power. A bag much lighter than half your weight swings too much.

Hanging and load

Hang a bag from a ceiling beam, a bracket in a solid wall or a dedicated stand, never from drywall or a suspended ceiling (Hunker). A swinging bag loads the mount several times its own weight, roughly three to four times by rough estimates, though there are no reliable standard values. If you aren't sure what the ceiling can take, ask a structural engineer or contractor.

Noise and neighbours

A steel spring between the mount and chain absorbs part of the impact energy and reduces vibration passed to the building, but doesn't remove the sound of the hit itself. Free-standing punching bags don't load the ceiling, but they pass impacts through the floor, so put a thick rubber mat under the base.

Water or sand in the base

A litre of water weighs about 1 kg and dry sand about 1.5 to 1.6 kg (Engineering ToolBox), so a sand-filled base is much heavier and more stable. The Everlast Powercore base takes about 113 kg of water or 167 kg of sand. Century recommends sand for the Wavemaster, and Everlast owners report that water can leak at the bolts.

Wraps and gloves

Wraps stabilise the wrist and hand bones, and gloves cushion the impact. Together they reduce the risk of sprains and the so-called boxer's fracture, a break of the metacarpal neck, usually of the fifth finger, caused by a clenched fist hitting something hard (PubMed). That wraps stabilise the wrist and thumb is described by Wikipedia, among others. Warm up dynamically for 10 to 15 minutes before training (Mercy).

Kids and boxing

The American and Canadian paediatric societies (AAP and CPS) opposed boxing for children and adolescents in 2011, mainly because of deliberate blows to the head (HealthDay). Bag work is non-contact, but kids need a light bag, suitable gloves and adult supervision.

1. RDX F6 Kara 145 cm

RDX F6 Kara 145 cm black hanging punching bag with wall bracket and chain Photo: RDX, Amazon

View on Amazon

The RDX F6 Kara 145 cm is our pick for most home boxing and kickboxing training. The bag is 145 cm tall, 177 cm with the chain, and covered in Maya Hide synthetic leather with an inner PU layer. It comes filled with textile and can be topped up to about 50 kg through a zip at the top.

Amazon lists about 25 kg as shipped, while RDX's blog says 20 to 22 kg, so expect a range. The four-strand chain has a 360° swivel, and a D-ring at the bottom anchors it against swinging. The listing offers 2PC, 3PC (with gloves) and 4PC (also with a wall bracket) sets; check which set is selected before ordering. The wall bracket needs a brick or concrete wall.

Feature Detail
Type hanging
Height 145 cm, 177 cm with chain
Weight 20-25 kg, up to about 50 kg
Filling textile, adjustable
Material Maya Hide synthetic leather
Mounting chain, swivel, D-ring
Sets 2PC, 3PC with gloves, 4PC with wall bracket
Price 132.99 €

Pros: wall bracket in the 4PC set, adjustable weight, D-ring against swinging, gloves in larger sets.

Cons: shipped weight differs between sources, wall bracket needs a solid wall, synthetic, not real leather.

Our opinion: Of all the punching bags here, the Kara 145 cm best covers users of about 50 to 90 kg, because its weight can be adjusted. The set with a wall bracket solves the ceiling problem.

2. Bad Company Canvas 100 x 30

View on Amazon

The Bad Company Canvas 100 x 30 cm is the cheapest adult bag in the comparison, at 79.90 euros. It's 100 cm tall and 30 cm in diameter, and filled weighs about 26 kg with the chain. The total height with the chain is about 135 cm.

The cover is tear-resistant canvas (according to the maker), but rougher on skin and knuckles. A four-point chain is included, a ceiling hook isn't. At about 26 kg, the bag swings more under hard hits. There's also an 80 x 30 cm version.

Feature Detail
Type hanging
Size 100 x 30 cm
Weight about 26 kg with chain
Height with chain about 135 cm
Cover canvas
Mounting chain, hook not included
Price 79.90 €

Pros: cheapest adult bag in the comparison, durable canvas, chain included.

Cons: canvas is rougher on skin, light so it swings, no ceiling hook.

Our opinion: For beginners and lighter users, this is a sensible start. With wraps and gloves, the canvas isn't a problem.

3. Kwon 120 cm

View on Amazon

The Kwon 120 cm is a 60 kg heavy bag, 35 cm in diameter, for heavier and experienced users. Its weight means it barely swings, so it takes hard punches and kicks. A ceiling mount, chain and swivel are included. Kwon is a German martial arts equipment brand.

According to the listing for the 150 cm bag in the same series, the cover is Bisonyl, a truck tarpaulin fabric resistant to UV and weather. At 219.90 euros it's the most expensive hanging bag in the comparison. At 60 kg plus dynamic load it needs a very solid ceiling, ideally concrete, and is too heavy for kids and lighter users.

Feature Detail
Type hanging
Size 120 cm, Ø 35 cm
Weight 60 kg
Mounting ceiling mount, chain, swivel
Cover Bisonyl (per series)
Price 219.90 €

Pros: very heavy so it barely swings, ceiling mount included, known brand.

Cons: needs a very solid ceiling, most expensive hanging bag here, too heavy for lighter users.

Our opinion: The Kwon is for users of about 100 kg and up and for garages or basements with concrete ceilings. In a flat with timber joists, have an expert check the load capacity before buying.

4. Everlast Powercore Freestanding

Everlast Powercore free-standing punching bag with water or sand base Photo: Everlast, Amazon

View on Amazon

The Everlast Powercore Freestanding is our pick for a flat where you can't drill the ceiling. The base takes about 113 kg of water or 167 kg of sand, and the Powercore ring absorbs impact and reduces base sliding. The height is adjustable; Everlast gives 137 to 165 cm and the Amazon listing 160 to 195 cm, so go by the maker's figure.

It isn't for outdoor use. Owners report in reviews that water can leak at the bolt holes, so sand is often recommended indoors, and some mention the top connector loosening. At 199.99 euros you get a stable free-standing bag without drilling, but you have to assemble it and fill the base yourself.

Feature Detail
Type free-standing
Height 137-165 cm (Everlast)
Base about 113 kg water / 167 kg sand
Damping Powercore ring
Use indoors only
Price 199.99 €

Pros: very heavy base with sand, ring reduces sliding, adjustable height.

Cons: water can leak at the bolts, top connector may loosen, not for outdoors.

Our opinion: For a flat, the Powercore is the most practical choice. Fill it with sand and put a rubber mat under it.

5. Century Original Wavemaster

Century Original Wavemaster red free-standing punching bag with round base Photo: Century, Amazon

View on Amazon

The Century Original Wavemaster is, according to Century, the original free-standing bag of its kind and a good choice for families, as the height adjusts in 7 positions from 119 to 173 cm. The striking section is 33 cm in diameter and 66 cm tall, made of dense foam with an 18 oz vinyl cover. With water it weighs about 113 kg in total, and Century recommends sand for the base.

The round base can be tilted and rolled to move it. The 66 cm striking section is short, so low kicks are limited, and under hard hits the bag can move on a smooth floor. At 249.99 euros it's the most expensive in the comparison.

Feature Detail
Type free-standing
Height 119-173 cm, 7 positions
Striking section Ø 33 cm, 66 cm tall
Material foam, 18 oz vinyl
Weight about 113 kg with water
Base sand or water (sand recommended)
Price 249.99 €

Pros: the original Wavemaster with no drilling, 7 heights also for teens, rolls to move.

Cons: short striking section, moves on smooth floors, most expensive in the list.

Our opinion: The Wavemaster is for families where adults and teens use the bag. For low kicks, the RDX XXL is better.

6. RDX XXL 6ft

View on Amazon

The RDX XXL 6ft is a 183 cm free-standing bag, so it allows low kicks, which kickboxing and MMA need. The base takes up to 130 kg of sand or 80 litres of water, and eight legs with double suction cups hold it in place. In total it weighs about 150 kg with sand or 110 kg with water.

The bag is Maya Hide synthetic leather with 3 cm EPE foam and a textile core, and gloves and a cover are included. The suction cups need a smooth, hard floor, the base takes up a lot of space, and it ships in two parcels that may arrive separately. It costs 229.99 euros.

Feature Detail
Type free-standing
Height 183 cm
Base up to 130 kg sand or 80 L water
Anchoring 8 legs, double suction cups
Material Maya Hide, 3 cm EPE foam
Included gloves, cover
Price 229.99 €

Pros: full height for low kicks, very stable base, gloves included.

Cons: suction cups need a smooth floor, big and heavy to fill, two parcels.

Our opinion: For kickboxing at home without a ceiling mount, the RDX XXL is the best choice. Measure the free space around the base before ordering.

The cover is Maya Hide synthetic leather with reinforced seams. RDX designed the bag for supervised training of young athletes. It's too small for adults, needs a hook or mount, and some RDX kids' variants ship unfilled, so check the one you choose.

Frequently asked questions

Free-standing or hanging punching bag?

A hanging bag gives more realistic resistance and in our comparison is usually cheaper, but needs a solid ceiling, wall or stand. A free-standing one is filled with water or sand, needs no drilling and is easy to move, but can shift under hard hits. For a flat without drilling, free-standing is better.

How heavy should the bag be?

The rule of thumb is about half your body weight, so a 72 kg person suits a bag of about 36 kg. A lighter bag is for speed, a heavier one for power. A bag much lighter than that swings too much.

How do you hang a punching bag?

From a ceiling beam, a bracket in a solid wall or a dedicated stand, never from drywall or a suspended ceiling. A swinging bag loads the mount several times its own weight, so have the load capacity checked by an expert.

Is a punching bag noisy?

Hits are always audible. A spring between the mount and chain reduces vibration passed to the building, and a free-standing bag doesn't load the ceiling, though it passes impacts through the floor. Put a rubber mat under the base and agree training times with the neighbours.

Do I need wraps and gloves?

Yes. Wraps stabilise the wrist and hand bones, and gloves cushion the impact, so together they reduce the risk of sprains and boxer's fracture. Warm up for 10 to 15 minutes before training.

Can a child use a punching bag?

Bag work is non-contact, unlike boxing, which paediatric societies have opposed because of blows to the head. Kids need a light bag, such as an 8 to 10 kg kids' bag like the RDX, suitable gloves and adult supervision.

How we chose

We chose these punching bags by type (hanging or free-standing), weight, height, material, mounting and price. We reviewed 10 models available on Amazon.de and checked each ASIN through Amazon's API. The data comes from Amazon listings and Everlast and Century pages, and where sources differ, we say so. We left out the bags from our boxing equipment article, listings with mixed-up descriptions and unbranded inflatable bags. Prices are live Amazon.de prices on 1 November 2026. We did not physically test the products.
