Best Mountain Bikes 2027

Best mountain bikes 2027: we compared 7 MTBs from 280 to 699 euros, from the Ghost Kato to the Axess Debris with hydraulic brakes, plus a frame size guide.

Ažurirano

Mountain bikes are the most versatile bikes you can buy: they handle gravel roads, forest tracks, island paths and the city equally well. This guide is for casual riders, beginners and parents of teenagers looking for a first proper MTB, not a race bike costing several thousand euros. The best mountain bikes 2027 on Amazon.de are the Axess Debris as the best value with hydraulic brakes, the Ghost Kato Universal as the only bike from a well-known bike shop brand in this range, and the Bikestar Hardtail as the cheapest way in. We compared seven models with live prices as of 25 October 2026, from 280.61 to 699 euros.

Let's be honest from the start: most bikes on Amazon are department-store grade, with entry-level parts such as Shimano Tourney derailleurs. For gravel and forest roads that is enough. For serious descents and enduro it is not, and you should go to a specialist bike shop.

How to choose a mountain bike

27.5 or 29 inch wheels. Mountain bikes today come mostly with one of these two wheel sizes. According to Wikipedia, 29 inch wheels roll over obstacles more easily and hold speed better, but they are heavier and slower to accelerate, and riders shorter than about 165 cm may face compromises in frame geometry. 27.5 inch wheels are more agile and a better choice for shorter riders.

Frame size. Mountain bikes are sold in several frame sizes, and you pick the frame by your height. Every manufacturer has its own chart. For its 27.5 inch model, Bikestar lists a 14 inch frame from 148 cm, 16 inch from 158 cm and 18 inch from 168 cm. If you fall between two sizes, the smaller frame rides more nimbly.

Hardtail or full suspension. A hardtail has only a front fork. It is cheaper, lighter, easier to maintain and pedals more efficiently, says Wikipedia. Full suspension is more comfortable on rough descents, but in this price class a good hardtail is regularly a better pick than a cheap full-suspension bike.

Brakes. Cheaper mountain bikes have mechanical disc brakes, pricier ones hydraulic. Mechanical brakes are pulled by a cable, hydraulic ones by fluid, so hydraulics brake harder and more consistently. On steep gravel descents you feel the difference.

1. Axess Debris

Check on Amazon

The Axess Debris is a 29 inch hardtail that gets you, for 399.99 euros, kit the cheaper models don't have: hydraulic disc brakes and a 100 mm fork with a handlebar lockout. The aluminium frame has internal cable routing, and the whole bike weighs 14.9 kg according to Amazon.de. For this price range, that is light.

It has 16 gears with two front chainrings, but the exact Shimano groupset is not specified in the listing. The frame comes in 19 and 21 inch sizes, while smaller sizes use 27.5 inch wheels. The brand belongs to the German retailer Lucky Bike, and the listing mentions a two-year manufacturer warranty.

Feature Detail
Wheels 29" (smaller sizes 27.5")
Frame aluminium, internal cable routing
Fork 100 mm, handlebar lockout
Gears 16 (2 front chainrings)
Brakes hydraulic disc
Weight 14.9 kg
Price €399.99

Pros: hydraulic brakes and lockout for about 400 euros, fairly light, two-year warranty.

Cons: groupset not specified, few Amazon reviews, no mudguards or kickstand.

Our opinion: If you take only one mountain bike from this list, take the Debris. Hydraulic brakes are the most important upgrade on a cheap MTB, and here they come at no extra cost.

2. Ghost Kato Universal

Ghost Kato Universal 27.5 inch mountain bike Photo: Ghost, Amazon

Check on Amazon

Ghost is the only well-known German bike shop brand we found on Amazon.de in this price range. According to the listing on Amazon.de, the Kato Universal has a RockShox Judy fork, a 27-speed Shimano Alivio drivetrain and Tektro hydraulic disc brakes, with 27.5 inch wheels and an aluminium frame.

This is a 2022 model sold from stock, in sizes XS (36 cm), S (40 cm) and M (44 cm). That makes it best for shorter riders and teenagers. Three front chainrings feel dated next to modern single-chainring systems, and Ghost does not list the weight.

Feature Detail
Wheels 27.5"
Frame aluminium, XS/S/M
Fork RockShox Judy, 100 mm
Gears 27, Shimano Alivio
Brakes Tektro hydraulic disc
Model year 2022
Price €699.00

Pros: a real bike shop brand, RockShox fork and Alivio drivetrain, small sizes for shorter riders.

Cons: 2022 stock model, sizes only up to M, 3x9 drivetrain more complex than a modern 1x.

Our opinion: If you are a shorter rider and want a bike that comes close to specialist-shop quality, the Kato is the best choice on Amazon. Taller riders simply won't find a size.

3. Bergsteiger Makalu 29

Check on Amazon

The Makalu has the best rating among the hardtails in this list: 4.6 out of 5 from about 150 reviews, combined across all variants. According to the listing on Amazon.de, it has an aluminium frame, 29 inch wheels, a fork with lockout and mechanical disc brakes front and rear.

The drivetrain is a 21-speed Shimano Tourney. Entry level, but gravel and city riding don't need more. A kickstand and reflectors are in the box, and the bike arrives 90 percent assembled. The manufacturer recommends it for riders from about 160 cm.

Feature Detail
Wheels 29"
Frame aluminium, from approx. 160 cm
Fork with lockout
Gears 21, Shimano Tourney
Brakes mechanical disc
Included kickstand, reflectors
Price €379.90

Pros: well rated, lockout fork and discs on both wheels, kickstand and reflectors included.

Cons: Tourney is an entry groupset, mechanical brakes weaker than hydraulic, weight not reliably stated.

Our opinion: The Makalu is a safe pick for a beginner riding gravel and town. For about twenty euros more the Debris brings hydraulic brakes, so compare both before buying.

4. Zündapp FX27

Zündapp FX27 27.5 inch mountain bike Photo: Zündapp, Amazon

Check on Amazon

The Zündapp FX27 is for people who don't want to fiddle with assembly: according to the Amazon.de listing it arrives 98 percent assembled, so you only fit the pedals. A bell, reflectors and a side stand are included, and a single 48 cm frame covers riders from 160 to 185 cm.

It has 27.5 inch wheels, an 80 mm spring fork, a 21-speed Shimano Tourney with grip shifter and 160 mm mechanical disc brakes. Zündapp itself notes that the bike is not road-ready without lights bought separately. The 80 mm fork says it all: this is a bike for gravel and town, and the forest is not its natural terrain.

Feature Detail
Wheels 27.5", 2.10 tyres
Frame aluminium 48 cm, 160-185 cm
Fork spring, 80 mm
Gears 21, Shimano Tourney, grip shift
Brakes mechanical disc 160/160 mm
Included bell, reflectors, stand
Price €389.00

Pros: almost fully assembled, bell, reflectors and stand included, one size for a wide height range.

Cons: only 80 mm of fork travel, grip shifter and basic Tourney, lights must be bought separately.

Our opinion: The FX27 suits someone who will ride more in town and on gravel than in the woods. Buy lights right away, because without them you may not ride on the road at night.

5. Bikestar Hardtail 27.5

Bikestar Hardtail aluminium 27.5 inch mountain bike Photo: Bikestar, Amazon

Check on Amazon

The Bikestar is the cheapest mountain bike in this comparison, and buyers give it 4.2 out of 5 (127 reviews). According to the listing on Amazon.de, it has a 6061 aluminium frame, double-wall aluminium rims, a 21-speed Shimano Tourney and mechanical disc brakes.

The frame comes in three sizes, from 14 inch for riders from 148 cm to 18 inch for riders from 168 cm. It weighs from about 18.2 kg (14 inch frame), and the maximum rider weight is 100 kg. The manufacturer puts it in ASTM category 2, meaning gravel and easy terrain with drops up to 15 cm, not demanding trails.

Feature Detail
Wheels 27.5", double-wall rims
Frame 6061 aluminium, 14/16/18 inch
Gears 21, Shimano Tourney
Brakes mechanical disc
Weight from approx. 18.2 kg (14" frame)
Max rider weight 100 kg
Price €280.61

Pros: lowest price, well rated, three frame sizes.

Cons: heavy, basic fork and Tourney groupset, only for easy terrain and riders up to 100 kg.

Our opinion: For riding to school, around the park and on gravel the Bikestar is enough and saves over a hundred euros. If you plan forest trails, put the money toward the Debris or Makalu.

6. Bergsteiger Kodiak 29

Bergsteiger Kodiak 29 full suspension mountain bike Photo: Bergsteiger, Amazon

Check on Amazon

The Kodiak is by far the most-reviewed model on the list, with about 1,950 reviews and a 4.4 out of 5 rating across all variants. It has full suspension, and according to the listing on Amazon.de you get a rear shock alongside the front spring fork, 29 inch wheels and a 21-speed Shimano Tourney TX.

The catch is in the details: the frame is steel, so the bike is heavy, and the rear has a V-brake. Only the front wheel gets a 160 mm disc. A kickstand and reflectors are included. Full suspension here means comfort on bumpy gravel, not real downhill or enduro.

Feature Detail
Type full suspension
Wheels 29"
Frame steel, from approx. 170 cm
Gears 21, Shimano Tourney TX
Brakes front disc, rear V-brake
Included kickstand, reflectors
Price €399.90

Pros: most popular model, full-suspension comfort on rough ground, kickstand and reflectors included.

Cons: heavy steel frame, rear V-brake, cheap suspension not for demanding descents.

Our opinion: The Kodiak is for those who want the comfort and look of full suspension on a small budget. If you ride steeper trails, the Debris with hydraulic brakes is the smarter buy for the same money.

7. Axess Sandee 27.5

Axess Sandee 27.5 inch youth mountain bike Photo: Axess, Amazon

Check on Amazon

The Sandee is for young riders moving up from a kids' bike to a real MTB. According to the listing on Amazon.de, it has Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes, rare on youth bikes, plus an SR Suntour XCE28 fork and a 16-speed Shimano Tourney derailleur.

The frame is aluminium, size 16, and the bike weighs 14.4 kg. For a lighter rider every kilo less matters a lot. The model is new on Amazon, so there are hardly any reviews yet. Like the Debris, the brand belongs to Lucky Bike, with a two-year warranty according to the listing.

Feature Detail
Wheels 27.5"
Frame aluminium, size 16
Fork SR Suntour XCE28
Gears 16, Shimano Tourney
Brakes Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc
Weight 14.4 kg
Price €429.99

Pros: hydraulic brakes on a youth bike, fairly light, two-year warranty.

Cons: few reviews, basic Tourney groupset and fork.

Our opinion: For a teenager the Sandee is the best choice, because a lighter bike and good brakes mean more confidence on the trail. Buy a helmet with it.

Rules for riding a mountain bike on the road in Croatia

Mountain bikes from Amazon mostly arrive without lights, and the Croatian Road Traffic Safety Act requires a bike to show a white light at the front and a red light at the rear at night and in poor visibility (Art. 101). At night, and in daytime when visibility is poor, a cyclist must wear a reflective vest, clothing or other reflective marking (Art. 113), and the fine for not doing so is 30 euros.

A helmet on the road is mandatory for cyclists under 16 (Art. 114). People may ride a bike in traffic on their own from age 14, and children from 9 with a school certificate of cycling proficiency or accompanied by someone aged at least 16 (Art. 215). Cyclists use the bike lane, and where there is none, ride as close as possible to the right edge of the carriageway (Art. 112). Rules differ in other countries, so check local law if you ride elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 27.5 or 29 inch mountain bike better?

Mountain bikes with 29 inch wheels roll over obstacles more easily and hold speed better, so they suit taller riders and longer gravel rides. 27.5 inch wheels are more agile and better for shorter riders, roughly under 165 cm, and for tight, twisty trails.

What frame size should I choose?

Size depends on your height, and charts differ by manufacturer. For 27.5 inch wheels, Bikestar lists a 14 inch frame from 148 cm, 16 inch from 158 cm and 18 inch from 168 cm. If you are between two sizes, the smaller frame rides more nimbly.

Hardtail or full suspension?

For recreation and a budget under 500 euros, a hardtail is better: it is lighter, cheaper to maintain and pedals more efficiently. Cheap full-suspension bikes like the Bergsteiger Kodiak are comfortable on rough ground, but they are heavier and have weaker components than a hardtail at the same price.

Is it worth buying a mountain bike on Amazon?

For gravel, town and easy forest trails it is, because mountain bikes on Amazon are often cheaper than in shops. Bikes from Amazon mostly have basic components and arrive 85 to 98 percent assembled. Before the first ride, check the brakes, gears and bolt tightness, or take the bike to a workshop.

Are hydraulic or mechanical disc brakes better?

Hydraulic disc brakes give stronger, more consistent braking than mechanical ones, which are cable-operated. On a mountain bike used on steep gravel and descents this is the most important safety difference, which gives models like the Axess Debris an edge.

Do I need a helmet for a mountain bike?

Under Croatia's Road Traffic Safety Act, a helmet on the road is mandatory for cyclists under 16. For adults it is not a legal requirement, but on a mountain bike, especially on trails, a helmet is the most important piece of gear.

How did we test and choose?

The mountain bikes in this comparison were not physically tested. We chose models to cover the main uses: hardtails with 27.5 and 29 inch wheels, one full-suspension bike and one youth bike, in a range from about 280 to 700 euros. We checked each model on Amazon.de through the official API, took specs from the manufacturer listings and ratings from the product pages. We left out models with contradictory data in the listing, and we point out where a model has few reviews.

Prices are live from Amazon.de as of 25 October 2026 and change, so click the button for the current price. The rules come from the Croatian Road Traffic Safety Act.
