Best Balance Bikes for Kids 2026

For many children, balance bikes are the simplest route to riding a bike without stabilisers. The child pushes off with their feet, learns balance and steering, and when they get on a real bike, pedals are the only thing left to master. In this guide we picked seven balance bikes available on Amazon.de, from 34 to 163 euros, for children from 18 months to five years.

This guide is for parents and grandparents looking for a Christmas or birthday present. For each balance bike we list the seat height, weight, tyre type and whether it has a brake, plus, where available, results from the German testers Stiftung Warentest and ÖKO-TEST.

1. Puky LR Light BR

Check on Amazon

The Puky LR Light got the best grade, "gut" (2.0), in Stiftung Warentest's test from December 2021. The BR version adds a rear V-brake with a lever sized for small hands, so the child learns to brake by hand before moving to a bike. The aluminium frame, fork and hubs keep the weight at 3.6 kg.

The 12.5-inch wheels have air tyres and spokes, giving better grip and a quieter ride than foam tyres. According to Puky, the bike is for children from two and a half years, 90 to 120 cm tall with an inside leg of 35 to 48 cm, and it carries up to 25 kg. There is a carry handle on the saddle, which helps when the child gets tired halfway through a walk.

Specification Detail
Wheels 12.5" with air tyres
Inside leg length 35-48 cm
Weight 3.6 kg
Frame aluminium
Brake rear hand V-brake
Age 2.5+ years (90-120 cm)
Max. load 25 kg
Price 162,95 €

Pros: best grade in the Stiftung Warentest test, light aluminium frame, air tyres, hand brake for learning to brake

Cons: most expensive on the list, air tyres can puncture, not for the youngest as it starts at two and a half

Our opinion: If you want one balance bike that will last from age two and a half to five and make the switch to a bike easier, this is it. The hand brake is a big advantage, because on a real bike the child already knows what to do.

2. Pinolino Lino

Pinolino Lino wooden balance bike Photo: Pinolino, Amazon

Check on Amazon

The Pinolino Lino is a wooden balance bike made of solid birch with a clear varnish. In ÖKO-TEST's test from January 2019 only two of ten balance bikes were rated "gut", and according to Utopia's overview one of them was the Lino. At the time, ÖKO-TEST found PAH compounds in the grips or saddles of seven products.

The Lino is a 2-in-1: the seat can be flipped into a "chopper" position and adjusts to eight positions. The maker lists it from 24 months, but sources differ on seat height (from 31 or 38 to 44 cm), so measure your child before buying. The EVA tyres do not puncture and need no pumping, but grip less in the wet. There is no brake, and the max load is 20 kg.

Specification Detail
Frame solid birch, clear varnish
Tyres EVA (foam, airless)
Seat 8 positions, up to 44 cm
Weight 4 kg
Brake no
Age from 24 months
Max. load 20 kg
Price 69,99 €

Pros: natural material that does not rust, "gut" in the ÖKO-TEST test, seat flips into chopper position, tyres do not puncture

Cons: 4 kg is a lot for a wooden balance bike, no brake or adjustable handlebar, EVA tyres grip less in the wet

Our opinion: The Lino is for parents who want a wooden toy that also looks good in the hallway. For gravel and wet tarmac, Puky's air tyres are better, but for the park and garden wood is perfectly fine.

3. Puky Next 14

Check on Amazon

The Puky Next 14 is a balance bike for older children, with 14-inch wheels and air tyres. The FlipChip system is interesting: the wheels can be swapped for 12-inch ones (the kit is sold separately), so the bike grows with the child. According to Puky, it is meant for children 95 to 130 cm tall with an inside leg of 35 to 52 cm.

The frame is nylon, and the bike has a rear hand V-brake, a kickstand and a non-slip footboard. At 4.1 kg it is heavier than the LR Light, so it suits four- and five-year-olds better than two-year-olds. It is a new model, so there are no independent tests yet.

Specification Detail
Wheels 14" with air tyres (FlipChip to 12")
Inside leg length 35-52 cm
Weight 4.1 kg
Frame nylon
Brake rear hand V-brake
Age 2.5+ years (95-130 cm)
Max. load 25 kg
Price 127,49 €

Pros: bigger 14-inch wheels for ages 4 to 5, grows with the child thanks to FlipChip, hand brake and kickstand

Cons: 4.1 kg is heavy for the youngest, the extra wheel kit costs extra, no independent tests yet

Our opinion: The Next 14 is for a child who has outgrown a small balance bike but is not ready for pedals yet. If you are buying for a three-year-old, get the LR Light and save the Next 14 for the next birthday.

4. Hudora Up 10

Check on Amazon

The Hudora Up 10 has the lowest seat on the list, just 24 cm, making it one of the few balance bikes for children from 18 months. It is meant for children 78 to 100 cm tall, and the seat goes up to 31.5 cm, according to the retailer's description. It weighs 2.9 kg, the least in this selection.

The 10-inch wheels (the front one is larger) and long wheelbase give stability, and the step-through is very low. The maker does not state the tyre or frame material. There is no brake, and the max load is 20 kg. Children outgrow it quickly, so it is a purchase for a year to a year and a half of riding.

Specification Detail
Wheels 10" (front larger)
Seat 24-31.5 cm
Weight 2.9 kg
Brake no
Age from 18 months (78-100 cm)
Max. load 20 kg
Price 49,95 €

Pros: lowest seat on the list, lightest balance bike in this selection, stable geometry and low step-through, affordable

Cons: quickly outgrown as the seat tops out at 31.5 cm, no brake, maker does not state tyre and frame material

Our opinion: The Up 10 is a good first step for a child who has just started walking confidently and wants to "ride" like older siblings. Expect to buy a bigger balance bike within a year, so do not spend more than around fifty euros.

5. Lionelo Bart Air

Lionelo Bart Air balance bike Photo: Lionelo, Amazon

Check on Amazon

The Lionelo Bart Air has 12-inch wheels with air tyres and a magnesium frame, and carries up to 30 kg, the most of the air-tyred balance bikes in this selection. The seat adjusts from 35 to 43 cm and the handlebar from 50 to 57 cm, according to the product description. It weighs 3.8 kg and has a carry handle.

One important note: the version without "Air", the Lionelo Bart, was rated "mangelhaft" (poor) in Stiftung Warentest's 2021 test because of harmful substances. The Bart Air is a different model and was not in that test. A 35 cm seat is too high for short two-year-olds, so measure inside leg length before buying.

Specification Detail
Wheels 12" with air tyres
Seat 35-43 cm
Handlebar 50-57 cm
Weight 3.8 kg
Frame magnesium
Brake no
Max. load 30 kg
Price 99,99 €

Pros: air tyres at a mid-range price, max load up to 30 kg, adjustable handlebar and carry handle

Cons: no brake, the non-"Air" version failed the 2021 test, seat too high for the smallest children

Our opinion: The Bart Air is a good choice for a three- or four-year-old who rides a lot in the park, because air tyres roll more comfortably over bumps. If a brake matters to you, spend about sixty euros more on the Puky LR Light BR.

6. Chillafish BMXie 2

Chillafish BMXie 2 balance bike Photo: Chillafish, Amazon

Check on Amazon

The Chillafish BMXie 2 has a reinforced plastic frame and 12-inch airless RubberSkin tyres, which do not puncture and grip better than foam EVA tyres, according to the maker's page. The seat adjusts without tools from 32 to 39 cm, and the bike is meant for children aged two to five.

The brake is a foot brake built into the footboard, which is better than nothing but weaker than a hand brake. The plastic frame does not rust and can be hosed down, and kids love the BMX look and number-plate stickers. The weight of about 3.6 kg comes from retailers; the maker does not publish it.

Specification Detail
Wheels 12" airless RubberSkin
Seat 32-39 cm, tool-free
Weight about 3.6 kg
Frame reinforced plastic
Brake foot brake in the footboard
Age 2-5 years
Price 56,70 €

Pros: tyres do not puncture yet grip better than EVA, tool-free seat adjustment, plastic does not rust and is easy to wash

Cons: foot brake weaker than a hand brake, plastic frame less rigid, narrower seat range

Our opinion: The BMXie 2 is a balance bike for parents who do not want to think about pumping tyres or rust. For around fifty euros you get a tough everyday bike that survives rain and sand.

7. Kinderkraft 2WAY Next

Kinderkraft 2WAY Next balance bike Photo: Kinderkraft, Amazon

Check on Amazon

The Kinderkraft 2WAY Next is the cheapest balance bike on the list at 33,90 euros. It has a steel frame and 12-inch wheels with EVA tyres, weighs 3 kg and carries up to 35 kg, according to the retailer's description. The seat adjusts from 31 to 40 cm and the handlebar from 52 to 59 cm.

At this price, do not expect a brake or air tyres. EVA tyres do not puncture but cushion less and grip less in the wet. A note: another Kinderkraft model, the Uniq, was rated "mangelhaft" in Stiftung Warentest's 2021 test; the 2WAY Next was not in that test.

Specification Detail
Wheels 12" EVA
Seat 31-40 cm
Handlebar 52-59 cm
Weight 3 kg
Frame steel
Brake no
Max. load 35 kg
Price 33,90 €

Pros: lowest price on the list, light at 3 kg, max load up to 35 kg, adjustable handlebar

Cons: no brake, EVA tyres cushion less, simpler build

Our opinion: The 2WAY Next is a good second balance bike, for grandma's house or the holiday home, or for a family not sure their child will ride at all. For the main bike your child rides every day, it is worth paying more for the Pinolino or Puky.

How to choose balance bikes: height, weight and brakes

The most important rule is seat height. The child's inside leg length should be at least 2 cm more than the seat height, so a child with a 40 cm inside leg needs a balance bike with a minimum seat height of about 38 cm, according to these buying tips. The child should stand with both feet flat on the ground and knees slightly bent.

The second thing is weight. Austrian kids' bike maker Woom advises that a bike should weigh no more than roughly 35 to 40% of the child's body weight. For a 12 kg two-year-old that means a balance bike of up to about 4.5 kg. Do not buy a bike "to grow into": a bike that is too big ends up in the corner.

Choose tyres by terrain. Air tyres grip and cushion best, while EVA and airless tyres do not puncture but are harder. A hand brake is not essential for a two-year-old, but from age three it makes the later move to a bike easier. And do not forget a kids helmet, because balance bikes pick up speed quickly downhill.

Conclusion: which balance bikes to buy

If you need Get Price
Best overall, with brake Puky LR Light BR 162,95 €
Wooden balance bike Pinolino Lino 69,99 €
Child aged 4 to 5 Puky Next 14 127,49 €
Child from 18 months Hudora Up 10 49,95 €
Air tyres at a mid-range price Lionelo Bart Air 99,99 €
No pumping, no rust Chillafish BMXie 2 56,70 €
Smallest budget Kinderkraft 2WAY Next 33,90 €

Balance bikes differ more in seat height than in price, so measure your child's inside leg first. For two- and three-year-olds the best choice is the Puky LR Light BR, the only one in this selection with a "gut" grade from Stiftung Warentest and a hand brake. If 160 euros is too much, the Pinolino Lino at 69,99 euros got a good ÖKO-TEST rating.

For the youngest from 18 months, take the Hudora Up 10, and for preschoolers the Puky Next 14. Once a child masters balance, the step to a bike is short, and in our guide to bikes for kids you will find the next step.

Frequently asked questions

What age are balance bikes for?

Most balance bikes with 12-inch wheels are meant for children from age two. Models with a very low seat, like the Hudora Up 10 with a 24 cm seat, suit children from 18 months, and balance bikes with 14-inch wheels suit children aged four to five.

How do I choose the right balance bike size?

Measure the child's inside leg length, from floor to crotch, without shoes. The lowest seat height should be at least 2 cm less than that measurement, so the child stands on the ground with feet flat and knees slightly bent.

Does a balance bike need a brake?

For a two-year-old it is not essential, as children naturally brake with their feet. From age three a hand brake is useful, because the child learns to brake by hand before moving to a bike. In this selection, the Puky LR Light BR and Puky Next 14 have hand brakes.

Wooden or metal balance bike?

Wooden balance bikes like the Pinolino Lino do not rust and look nice, but are often heavier and have no brake or adjustable handlebar. Metal ones with an aluminium frame are lighter and have air tyres, so they ride better on uneven ground.

Is a balance bike better than stabilisers?

A balance bike teaches balance, while stabilisers actually prevent it, because the child does not have to hold the bike upright. Once a child masters balance on a balance bike, all that is left on a bike is learning pedals and braking, so stabilisers are usually no longer needed.

How we chose

We chose balance bikes by child's age, seat height, weight, tyres and brake, and by availability on Amazon.de with delivery to Croatia. We took into account Stiftung Warentest's test from December 2021 and ÖKO-TEST's from January 2019. Models that failed those tests because of harmful substances (for example the Puky LR M) were left out, and where a different model from the same brand failed, we say so clearly. Woom, Early Rider and Strider were not included because they are not available on Amazon.de. Prices were checked on 7 October 2026, and we did not test the bikes ourselves.
