Aquariums sold as complete kits on Amazon.de cost from 78.49 euros for the 19-litre Aquael Shrimp Set Smart to 179.99 euros for the 30-litre Dennerle Nano Cube Complete. This guide is for beginners and parents who want a first tank with fish or shrimp but don't know what size is enough, how many fish fit and why fish don't go in straight away. The best aquariums of 2027 are the Tetra Starter Line 54 L as the best kit to start with (98.98 euros), the Tetra Starter Line 105 L as the most stable for a fish community (169.99 euros) and the Aquael Leddy 60 Day & Night 2.0 as a 54 L alternative with day and night lighting (113.50 euros). We compared seven models with live prices on 1 November 2026.
Complete aquariums differ in what's in the box. All the aquariums in this comparison have a filter and lighting, but two models (Fluval Flex and Dennerle Nano Cube) have no heater, and tropical fish can't do without one.

How to choose aquariums
Size for a beginner
Bigger aquariums are more stable than small ones, because temperature and water quality change more slowly in more water. The RSPCA, the British animal welfare charity, recommends a tank larger than 45 x 30 x 30 cm (about 40 litres), wider rather than taller, because a bigger water surface gives more oxygen (RSPCA). The RSPCA doesn't recommend decorative tanks such as fish bowls, because there's no room for an effective filter and the water surface is too small. The 19 and 30-litre nano tanks in this comparison are therefore for shrimp and snails, not a first fish community.
Cycling and the nitrogen cycle
In a tank, bacteria convert ammonia from fish waste into nitrite, which is also toxic, and other bacteria then convert nitrite into less harmful nitrate. The RSPCA strongly recommends cycling without fish until ammonia and nitrite rise and then fall to zero, which takes at least two weeks. Aqueon says establishing the cycle usually takes three to eight weeks (Aqueon). Fluval advises starting with just a few hardy fish and waiting about a month before adding more.
How many fish
As a guideline, the RSPCA gives 1.5 to 2 litres of water per 1 cm of fish length, excluding the tail; count on the adult size. The popular "1 cm of fish per litre" rule is looser than that and ignores the fish's adult size. These are only guidelines, since water quality also depends on filtration and maintenance.
Where to place an aquarium
Full aquariums are heavy: a litre of water weighs about a kilogram, and glass and gravel add more. Tetra gives about 58 kg filled for the Starter Line 54 L and about 112.5 kg for the 105 L (Tetra manual). Put the tank on a sturdy, level cabinet. The RSPCA advises against placing it by a window, in direct sun or next to a radiator, as the water can overheat dangerously.
Electricity use
For the Tetra Starter Line 54 L, a 10 W LED at 10 hours a day uses about 0.1 kWh, and a 3.5 W filter running all the time about 0.084 kWh a day. The 50 W heater has a thermostat and only switches on part of the time, so its consumption depends on room temperature; running non-stop, it would use 1.2 kWh a day. The 105 L has a 100 W heater, so the winter cost is higher.
Lighting and temperature
The RSPCA says 8 to 10 hours of light a day, off at night, suits most species. Tropical fish need a thermostat heater set for the species, and Tetra's heaters are factory set to 25 °C. Check the temperature daily with a thermometer.
Don't release fish into nature
In Croatia, the Act on preventing the introduction and spread of non-native and invasive non-native species (NN 15/18, 14/19) bans releasing non-native species into nature without a permit (zakon.hr). The EU list of invasive species includes the marbled crayfish, the aquatic plant Cabomba caroliniana and the red-eared slider turtle, so EU-wide bans on sale, breeding and release apply to them; pets already kept may only be kept under strict conditions until they die naturally. Never release aquarium animals or plants into rivers, lakes or drains. Outside Croatia, the same EU list applies across the EU.
1. Tetra Starter Line 54 L
Photo: Tetra, Amazon
The Tetra Starter Line 54 L is our pick for beginners. For 98.98 euros you get a tank with standard 60 x 30 x 30 cm dimensions, a lid with 10 W LED lighting with day and night modes, an internal EasyCrystal FilterBox 300 filter and a 50 W heater factory set to 25 °C. TetraMin food and AquaSafe conditioner are also in the box.
The filter has a flow of 300 l/h, uses 3.5 W and has a compartment for the heater. Filled, the tank weighs about 58 kg. Olibetta lists 4 mm glass, while Tetra says "up to 6 mm" for the whole range. According to Tetra, the filter cartridge should be replaced about every four weeks, an extra cost, and the warranty is 2 years.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Volume | 54 L |
| Size | 60 x 30 x 30 cm |
| Filter | EasyCrystal FilterBox 300, 300 l/h, 3.5 W |
| Heater | 50 W, 25 °C |
| Lighting | LED 10 W, day and night |
| In the box | lid, food, AquaSafe |
| Filled weight | about 58 kg |
| Price | 98.98 € |
Pros: everything in the box including the heater, lowest price for a 54 L kit with a heater, standard size that's easy to find a cabinet for, low power use.
Cons: thin glass (4 mm), filter cartridges are an extra cost.
Our opinion: Of all the aquariums here, the Starter Line 54 L best combines price and a complete kit. For a first community of small fish you need nothing else but patience during cycling.
2. Aquael Leddy 60 Day & Night 2.0
Photo: Aquael, Amazon
The Aquael Leddy 60 Day & Night 2.0 is an alternative to the Tetra in the same format: 54 litres and 60 x 30 x 30 cm. For 113.50 euros you get an internal ASAP 300 filter with 300 l/h flow, an automatic FIX 50 heater of 50 W and a 7 W LED tube with day and night lighting.
According to Olibetta, the glass is 4 mm. The lid has built-in lighting. Food and conditioner aren't listed in the sources as included. It costs more than a Tetra with similar equipment.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Volume | 54 L |
| Size | 60 x 30 x 30 cm |
| Filter | ASAP 300, 300 l/h, 4.2 W |
| Heater | FIX 50, 50 W, automatic |
| Lighting | LED 7 W, day and night |
| Glass | 4 mm |
| Price | 113.50 € |
Pros: day and night lighting, automatic heater, same standard size as the Tetra.
Cons: pricier than the Tetra, food and conditioner not listed, thin glass.
Our opinion: The Leddy 60 is a good choice if the Tetra is sold out or you prefer Aquael's lid. Their equipment is almost the same.
3. Tetra Starter Line 105 L
Photo: Tetra, Amazon
The Tetra Starter Line 105 L is for beginners who have the space and want a more stable fish community. A bigger volume changes water parameters more slowly, which according to the RSPCA makes things easier for a beginner. For 169.99 euros you get an EasyCrystal FilterBox 600 filter with 600 l/h flow, a 100 W heater, 16 W LED with day and night modes, plus food and AquaSafe.
The glass is 6 mm and the dimensions are 76 x 48 x 37 cm. Filled, it weighs about 112.5 kg, so it needs a sturdy cabinet; Tetra sells one separately for about 116 euros on Amazon.de. The 100 W heater uses more electricity in winter.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Volume | 105 L |
| Size | 76 x 48 x 37 cm |
| Glass | 6 mm |
| Filter | EasyCrystal FilterBox 600, 600 l/h, 7.5 W |
| Heater | 100 W, 25 °C |
| Lighting | LED 16 W, day and night |
| Filled weight | about 112.5 kg |
| Price | 169.99 € |
Pros: bigger volume for more stable water, thicker glass, strongest equipment in the range, excellent litres-to-price ratio.
Cons: over 110 kg filled, cabinet sold separately, higher heater consumption in winter.
Our opinion: If you have the space and a sturdy cabinet, the 105 L is a better first aquarium than the 54 L. For 71 euros more you get almost twice the water and more room for mistakes.
4. Fluval Flex 2.0 57 L
Photo: Fluval, Amazon
The Fluval Flex 2.0 57 L is for lovers of design and plants. The curved front glass and filtration hidden in a rear chamber give a clean look, and the 7.9 W LED (white and RGB) with remote control has more than 80 effects. The dimensions are 41 x 39 x 39 cm.
Filtration has three sponges, activated carbon and BIOMAX media, and according to Aquasabi the pump does 480 l/h, a figure given for 120 V. No heater is included, and for tropical fish you need to buy one. At 164.99 euros it costs more than a Tetra or Aquael of similar size.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Volume | 57 L |
| Size | 41 x 39 x 39 cm |
| Filtration | rear chamber, 480 l/h, 6.6 W |
| Lighting | LED 7.9 W (white + RGB), remote |
| Heater | not included |
| Price | 164.99 € |
Pros: hidden filter and clean look, LED with RGB effects and remote, quality filter media.
Cons: no heater, pricier than Tetra and Aquael.
Our opinion: The Flex 2.0 is for people who want an aquarium that looks good on a sideboard. For tropical fish, buy a small heater straight away.
5. Tetra AquaArt Explorer Line 60 L
Photo: Tetra, Amazon
The Tetra AquaArt Explorer Line 60 L is a half-moon tank with a 180° curved front, designed as a living-room centrepiece. For 129.99 euros you get an EasyCrystal filter, a heater, 8.5 W LED with day and night modes, a clear acrylic lid and food and water care products.
According to Olibetta the glass is 6 mm, and the size with lid is 51 x 36 x 61 cm. The sources don't publish the heater wattage or filter flow. The curved glass distorts the view slightly, and because of the half-moon shape only the AquaArt lid and AquaArt cabinet fit (about 105 euros on Amazon.de).
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Volume | 60 L |
| Size | 51 x 36 x 61 cm with lid |
| Glass | 6 mm, curved |
| Filter | EasyCrystal, flow not published |
| Heater | included, wattage not published |
| Lighting | LED 8.5 W, day and night |
| Price | 129.99 € |
Pros: designer shape, complete kit with heater, clear lid.
Cons: curved glass distorts the view, only AquaArt parts fit, heater and filter specs not published.
Our opinion: The Explorer Line is for buyers to whom looks matter as much as the fish. The Starter Line 54 L is about 31 euros cheaper and more practical.
6. Dennerle Nano Cube Complete 30 L
Photo: Dennerle, Amazon
The Dennerle Nano Cube Complete 30 L is a classic for a desk nano tank with shrimp and plants. The 30 x 30 x 35 cm cube has glass with rounded corners, a Corner Filter 40 and an onex30 LED light of 7.2 W. The kit also includes 2 kg of Deponit Mix Pro nutrient substrate and 6 kg of Shrimp Gravel.
At 179.99 euros it's the most expensive kit in the comparison, and there's no heater. Dennerle doesn't publish the filter flow. At 30 litres it's more sensitive to mistakes than larger tanks, so it isn't an ideal first aquarium for fish.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Volume | 30 L |
| Size | 30 x 30 x 35 cm |
| Glass | 5 mm, rounded corners |
| Filter | Corner Filter 40, flow not published |
| Lighting | LED onex30, 7.2 W |
| Substrate | Deponit Mix Pro 2 kg + Shrimp Gravel 6 kg |
| Heater | not included |
| Price | 179.99 € |
Pros: premium look, substrate and gravel for plants included, a classic for shrimp.
Cons: no heater, high price for 30 L, small volume sensitive to mistakes.
Our opinion: The Nano Cube is for anyone who wants a planted shrimp tank on their desk. For fish, a bigger aquarium is better.
7. Aquael Shrimp Set Smart Day & Night 20
Photo: Aquael, Amazon
The Aquael Shrimp Set Smart Day & Night 20 is the cheapest complete nano kit in the comparison, at 78.49 euros. Although sold as 20 L, it holds 19 litres and measures 25 x 25 x 30 cm. The kit includes a Turbo Mini filter with 320 l/h flow, a 50 W heater, a 4.8 W Leddy Smart LED and a glass lid.
The night lighting mode only works with an extra Socket Link Duo, which isn't included. A 50 W heater is strong for 19 litres, so monitor the temperature with a thermometer. For most fish 19 litres is too small, so this set is for shrimp and snails.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Volume | 19 L |
| Size | 25 x 25 x 30 cm |
| Filter | Turbo Mini, 320 l/h |
| Heater | 50 W |
| Lighting | LED 4.8 W |
| Lid | glass |
| Price | 78.49 € |
Pros: cheapest nano kit with a heater, designed for shrimp, glass lid.
Cons: only 19 L, night mode needs an extra device, strong heater for a small volume.
Our opinion: The Shrimp Set is the cheapest way to start with shrimp. It's too small for fish.
Water care
The RSPCA advises regular partial water changes of between 10 and 30%, and Aqueon about 10% a week once the tank has cycled. Treat tap water with conditioner and match its temperature to the tank. Don't rinse filter sponges under the tap, because that kills the beneficial bacteria; rinse them in water taken out of the tank instead. Test ammonia and nitrite every two weeks.
Conclusion: which aquariums to choose?
For most beginners the best choice is the Tetra Starter Line 54 L for 98.98 euros, because everything is in the box, including the heater. If you have the space, the Starter Line 105 L is more stable and more forgiving. For design there are the Fluval Flex and Tetra Explorer, and the Dennerle and Aquael nano tanks are for shrimp, not fish. All aquariums need a few weeks of cycling before fish go in.

Frequently asked questions
What size aquarium for a beginner?
The RSPCA recommends a tank larger than 45 x 30 x 30 cm, about 40 litres, because a bigger volume has more stable water. Kits of 54 to 105 litres are a good start, and nano tanks of 20 to 30 litres are better for shrimp than fish.
How long does cycling an aquarium take?
The RSPCA says at least two weeks without fish, until ammonia and nitrite fall to zero, and Aqueon three to eight weeks. Then, according to Fluval, add only a few hardy fish and wait about a month before adding more.
How many fish can go in an aquarium?
As a guideline, the RSPCA gives 1.5 to 2 litres of water per 1 cm of fish length. Count on the adult size of the fish, not the juveniles in the shop, and don't stock the tank all at once.
How much electricity does an aquarium use?
For the Tetra Starter Line 54 L, the light uses about 0.1 kWh and the filter about 0.084 kWh a day. A thermostat heater runs part of the time, so its consumption depends on room temperature and is highest in winter.
Where should an aquarium go?
On a sturdy, level cabinet that carries the full weight, since a litre of water weighs about a kilogram. Not by a window, in direct sun or next to a radiator, as the water can overheat.
How often should I change the water?
Regularly and partially, between 10 and 30% according to the RSPCA, and about 10% a week after cycling according to Aqueon. Treat new water with conditioner and match its temperature.
How we chose
We chose these aquariums by volume, kit equipment (filter, heater, lighting), glass quality, published data and price. We reviewed 10 kits available on Amazon.de and checked each ASIN through Amazon's API. The data comes from Tetra's manual, Dennerle and Aquael pages and retailer specs. We didn't include Juwel aquariums because Amazon.de doesn't sell them as kits, and we left out glass tanks without equipment and unbranded listings. Prices are live Amazon.de prices on 1 November 2026. We did not physically test the products.
