New Year's Eve in a European city does not require a long trip: many of the best celebrations are only a few hours' drive from Zagreb. In this guide we picked seven cities, from Ljubljana at an hour and 45 minutes to Edinburgh, which you have to fly to. For each one we cover what happens on 31 December, whether entry is free, which fireworks rules apply, how public transport runs that night and how to get there from Zagreb.
An important note: on the publication date (7 October 2026) only Edinburgh had announced its full 2026/27 programme, and Vienna part of it. For the other cities we describe the last edition (2025/26) and mark it clearly, as programmes are usually announced in November and December.

Vienna's Silvesterpfad is an open-air New Year's Eve trail through the whole old town. According to wien.info, on 31 December 2026 it runs from 14:00 to 02:00, with a route from Freyung and Am Hof via the Graben and Stephansplatz to Kärntner Straße and Neuer Markt, plus extra stages on Rathausplatz and Riesenradplatz in the Prater. On the Graben, dance schools give free waltz lessons in the afternoon, and at midnight people dance to the Blue Danube waltz and the Pummerin bell. According to Vienna.at, about 550,000 people saw in 2026 there.
The next day, 1 January 2027, the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert conducted by Tugan Sokhiev is shown live on screens at Stephansplatz. Tickets for the concert itself are allocated only by ballot, and registration for 2026/27 closed in February 2026. Fireworks from category F2 upwards are banned across Vienna.

|---|---|
| Main event | Silvesterpfad, 31 Dec from 14:00 to 02:00 |
| Entry | free |
| Fireworks | F2 and above banned across the city |
| Transport | U-Bahn runs all night |
| From Zagreb | 368 km, about 4 h 10 min; direct Croatia Airlines flight |
Pros: free and all day, waltzing and the New Year's Concert on screen, underground runs all night
Cons: big crowds, U1 and U3 skip Stephansplatz from about 22:00, accommodation for New Year's Eve gets pricey fast
Our opinion: Vienna is the best choice for a first New Year's Eve abroad: it is close, free and well organised. Take the U-Bahn to Herrengasse or Karlsplatz, as the central S-Bahn section is closed until October 2027.
2. Budapest (Hungary)

Budapest has no official city fireworks on New Year's Eve, but it offers plenty of parties, from the main square to boats on the Danube. The busiest public gathering is Vörösmarty tér, where in 2025/26 the Christmas market stayed open until 03:00 with music and mulled wine. On top of that there are paid parties: dinner cruises on the Danube, a party at the Rudas thermal bath and a big festival at Kincsem Park.
Stricter rules have applied since 15 December 2025: private fireworks may only be set off from 20:00 on 31 December to 02:00 on 1 January, and they are banned completely on Vörösmarty tér, in front of St Stephen's Basilica and along Váci utca, according to Telex. Fines go up to 1.2 million forints. The metro and HÉV trains run all night on New Year's Eve, according to BKK.

|---|---|
| Main event | Vörösmarty tér, cruises, baths (2025/26 edition) |
| Entry | square free, parties paid |
| Fireworks | only 31 Dec 20:00 to 1 Jan 02:00, bans in the centre |
| Transport | metro M1-M4 and HÉV all night |
| From Zagreb | 346 km, about 3 h 50 min; no direct flight |
Pros: close and affordable, a party in a thermal bath is unique, metro runs all night
Cons: no official city fireworks, strict rules and high fines for fireworks
Our opinion: Budapest is for those looking for a party rather than a big fireworks show. If it is your first time, book a bath party or a cruise, and leave the car at your accommodation and use the metro.
3. Ljubljana (Slovenia)

Ljubljana is the closest city on the list and the simplest New Year's Eve for people from Zagreb: the drive takes about an hour and 45 minutes. For 2026, the city celebrated on four squares from 21:00, with the main stage on Kongresni trg and a rock programme on Trg francoske revolucije, and at midnight a five-minute fireworks show went up from Ljubljana Castle, according to Visit Ljubljana. There is a separate children's celebration on Kongresni trg from 16:00.
LPP city buses were free every day after 17:00 from 26 December to 2 January and ran all night on New Year's Eve; P+R parking was free too, according to N1. In Slovenia, fireworks are allowed only from 26 December to 2 January and not at public gatherings, with fines of 400 to 1,200 euros.

| Main event | four squares and castle fireworks (2025/26 edition) |
| Entry | free |
| Fireworks | only 26 Dec to 2 Jan, not at public gatherings |
| Transport | free buses after 17:00, all night on New Year's Eve |
| From Zagreb | 139 km, about 1 h 45 min |
Pros: closest to Zagreb, free programme and transport, doable as a day trip
Cons: smaller than the big capitals, 2026/27 programme not yet announced
Our opinion: Ljubljana is ideal if you do not want to stay overnight. Leave the car at a P+R car park, take the bus into the centre and head back after midnight. Leave firecrackers at home, as Slovenian police confiscate them.
4. Prague (Czech Republic)

In Prague, New Year's Eve is celebrated on Old Town Square, where the Christmas market organisers put on a seven-hour programme with a children's party and a music marathon, according to Prague.eu. Thousands also celebrate along the Vltava and on Charles Bridge and Mánes Bridge. The Christmas markets run from 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, while the 2026/27 New Year's programme has not yet been announced.
Prague has tightened the rules: private fireworks are banned all year in 35 of its 57 districts, including Prague 1 (the old town), according to Expats.cz. Sky lanterns are banned across the city. The metro runs late on New Year's Eve, with the last trains passing through the centre just after 02:00; after that, night trams run.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Main event | Old Town Square, Vltava banks |
| Entry | free |
| Fireworks | banned all year in 35 of 57 districts |
| Transport | metro until just after 02:00, then night trams |
| From Zagreb | 645 km, about 7 h 40 min; direct flight per search sites (check) |
Pros: the Christmas market runs until 6 January, free programme in the centre, atmosphere on the bridges
Cons: long drive, metro does not run all night, official programme for 1 January not confirmed
Our opinion: Prague is for those who want to combine a Christmas market and New Year's Eve in one three- or four-day trip. Do not bring your own fireworks, as they are banned in the old town all year round.
5. Berlin (Germany)

For years Berlin hosted Germany's biggest open-air party at the Brandenburg Gate, but after the traditional "Festmeile" was cancelled, the city organised a smaller party for 2025/26, according to berlin.de. It was a DJ party from 22:00 for about 20,000 people and a 7.5-minute fireworks show at midnight. Tickets were free but required advance booking, at most two per person, and they went quickly.
For 2026/27, berlin.de says the date is not yet confirmed. Bags are checked at the entrance, and your own food, alcohol, fireworks and large backpacks are not allowed. The U-Bahn runs all night on all lines on New Year's Eve, and there are zones where fireworks are fully banned, such as Alexanderplatz.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Main event | party at the Brandenburg Gate (2025/26 edition) |
| Entry | free with booking |
| Fireworks | ban zones (Alexanderplatz and others) |
| Transport | U-Bahn all night, Ringbahn every 10 min |
| From Zagreb | 1,061 km, about 11 h; direct Croatia Airlines flight |
Pros: iconic location, free entry, U-Bahn runs all night
Cons: 2026/27 programme not confirmed, limited places, strict checks at the entrance
Our opinion: Plan Berlin around a direct flight from Zagreb and watch berlin.de from early December. If the party happens again, book tickets as soon as they open, as in 2025 they did not last long.
6. Rome (Italy)

For the fourth year running, Rome held a free concert at Circo Massimo to see in 2026, with Alessandra Amoroso, Fabri Fibra and Tananai, plus a DJ set after midnight, according to Turismo Roma. More than 40,000 people were expected. The 2026/27 programme has not yet been announced.
In 2025/26 Rome banned firecrackers and fireworks from 31 December to 6 January, with fines of 25 to 500 euros, and there were metal detectors at the Circo Massimo entrances, according to Sky TG24. All metro lines ran until 02:30, followed by night buses.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Main event | concert at Circo Massimo (2025/26 edition) |
| Entry | free |
| Fireworks | banned 31 Dec to 6 Jan, fines 25-500 EUR |
| Transport | metro until 02:30, then night buses |
| From Zagreb | 893 km, about 9 h 25 min; direct flight per search sites (check) |
Pros: free open-air concert, milder winter than central Europe, combines well with sightseeing
Cons: far by car, security checks at the entrance, 2026/27 programme not announced
Our opinion: Rome is a good choice for those for whom New Year's Eve is not the only reason to travel. Arrive early for the concert because of the checks, and leave firecrackers and glass bottles at the hotel.
7. Edinburgh (Scotland)

Edinburgh's Hogmanay is the only New Year's Eve celebration on the list whose 2026/27 programme is fully announced. According to the official site, the festival runs for four days: a torchlight procession on 29 December, a concert by The Fratellis on 30 December, the Street Party on Princes Street and Hogmanay in the Gardens with Underworld on 31 December, with the band playing live to the midnight fireworks below the castle for the first time, and the free First Footin' on 1 January.
Tickets for the Street Party start at 10 pounds and for Hogmanay in the Gardens at 79 pounds, both for ages 12 and over. They are sold only on the official site; tickets from Eventbrite and resale sites are not valid. There is no direct flight from Zagreb, and by car it is more than 2,000 km.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Main event | Street Party and Hogmanay in the Gardens, 29 Dec to 1 Jan |
| Entry | Street Party from 10 GBP, Gardens from 79 GBP |
| Banned | glass, drones, flares, own fireworks |
| Transport | buses diverted from 30 Dec |
| From Zagreb | flight with a change |
Pros: the only fully announced programme, four days of festival, fireworks over the castle
Cons: most expensive on the list, no direct flight, tickets only via the official site
Our opinion: Edinburgh is for those who want to turn New Year's Eve into a bigger trip of several days. Save the QR ticket to your Wallet, as the organiser warns that mobile data can fail in the crowds.
Practical tips for New Year's Eve abroad
A few rules apply in every city. Do not bring your own fireworks: Vienna, Prague, Budapest and Rome ban or strictly limit them, and fines are high. Bags are checked at big events, and glass, alcohol and large backpacks are often not allowed.
Public transport on New Year's Eve runs all night in Vienna, Berlin, Budapest and Ljubljana, and until about 02:00 to 02:30 in Prague and Rome. So leave the car at your accommodation or at a P+R car park. If you are driving to Austria, also see our guide to vignettes and tolls for 2027, as the Austrian 2027 vignette is valid from 1 December 2026.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the best New Year's Eve in Europe?
For travellers from Croatia, the best balance of distance and experience is Vienna (free Silvesterpfad), Budapest and Ljubljana. For big fireworks and a festival, Berlin at the Brandenburg Gate and Edinburgh's Hogmanay stand out, but you need to fly.
Is an open-air New Year's Eve celebration free?
In most cities on the list, yes: the Silvesterpfad in Vienna, the squares in Ljubljana and Prague, the concert in Rome and the party at the Brandenburg Gate (with booking) are free. Edinburgh charges from 10 pounds for the Street Party, and in Budapest you pay for parties on boats and in baths.
How far ahead should I book accommodation for New Year?
As early as possible, ideally in October or November. Accommodation for New Year's Eve in Vienna, Prague and Budapest quickly gets more expensive, and free tickets with limited places, like those for the Brandenburg Gate, go quickly once booking opens.
Can I bring fireworks or firecrackers?
Better not. Vienna bans fireworks from category F2 upwards, Prague bans private fireworks in most central districts all year, Budapest limits them to a few hours outside the centre, and Rome bans them from 31 December to 6 January. Slovenian police confiscate firecrackers.
How do I get back to my accommodation after midnight?
In Vienna, Berlin, Budapest and Ljubljana, public transport runs all night on New Year's Eve. In Prague the last metro passes through the centre just after 02:00, and in Rome around 02:30, after which night trams and buses run.
How we chose
We chose the cities by the quality of their New Year's Eve programme, accessibility from Zagreb by car or direct flight, and budget range. Programme, ticket, rules and transport details come from official city and tourist board sites (wien.info, berlin.de, prague.eu, visitljubljana.com, turismoroma.it, edwinterfest.com) and transport operators (BKK, PID, ATAC), plus reliable media. Where the 2026/27 programme is not yet announced, we describe the 2025/26 edition and say so clearly. Information is as of 7 October 2026.
