1. Terme Tuhelj (Croatia)

Terme Tuhelj in the Croatian Zagorje is the nearest large thermal complex to Zagreb, just 57 kilometres and 50 minutes' drive away. Its Water Planet stretches across 15,000 square metres with more than 5,000 square metres of water surface, eight pools, four adrenaline slides and two children's water towns called TuhiLand. It is also home to the largest sauna centre in Croatia, with six saunas.

Water temperature ranges from 27 to 34 degrees depending on the pool, with therapeutic pools going up to 32-34 degrees. The adult day ticket is 17 euros on weekdays and 24 euros on weekends and holidays, while an afternoon ticket from 3 pm costs 14 or 17 euros. A family ticket is 50 to 66 euros.

Detail Info
Country / region Croatia, Krapina-Zagorje
Day ticket (adult) 17 EUR (weekday), 24 EUR (weekend)
Water temperature 27-34°C
Key facilities 8 pools, 4 slides, TuhiLand, 6 saunas
From Zagreb ~57 km, 50 min

Who it is ideal for: the nearest big day trip from Zagreb, families with children and sauna lovers.

Watch out for: it gets busy on weekends, and the sauna world and wellness are charged separately from pool entry.

Our opinion: Tuhelj is our first pick when we want plenty to do without a long drive. For a family with children it is hard to find a better mix of proximity and fun. Tip: go on a weekday if you can, as the ticket is cheaper and the pools are emptier.

2. Aquae Vivae Krapinske Toplice (Croatia)

Aquae Vivae in Krapinske Toplice is the largest indoor water park in this part of Europe, which makes it perfect even in bad weather, since everything is under a roof. The complex spans more than 18,000 square metres with over 1,100 square metres of water surface and includes indoor and outdoor pools with slides, a wave pool, a children's and a diving pool, and a sauna world.

Water temperature ranges from 28 to 38 degrees depending on the pool. A full-day adult ticket costs 20 euros, and 15 euros for children aged 6 to 15; a three-hour ticket is 15 or 10 euros. A package for two adults and one child is 48 euros, and children up to age 6 enter free. Krapinske Toplice is about 50 kilometres, roughly 45 minutes' drive.

Detail Info
Country / region Croatia, Krapina-Zagorje
Day ticket (adult) 20 EUR
Water temperature 28-38°C
Key facilities largest indoor water park in the region, wave pool, sauna world
From Zagreb ~50 km, 45 min

Who it is ideal for: a year-round trip, especially in winter and rain, and families who want everything under a roof.

Watch out for: being mostly indoors, in summer there is less open-air bathing than at spas with big outdoor rivieras.

Our opinion: Aquae Vivae is our choice when the weather does not cooperate. While it rains or snows outside, inside it is warm and full of slides. For a family winter trip from Zagreb it is one of the safest bets.

3. Terme Čatež (Slovenia)

Although in Slovenia, Terme Čatež is actually the nearest large thermal park to Zagreb, just 40 kilometres and 40 minutes' drive, right across the border near Bregana. It is also the largest water park in Slovenia and one of the biggest in Central Europe. The summer Thermal Riviera offers over 10,000 square metres of water surface, while the winter riviera has over 6,500 square metres of indoor pools.

The choice of slides is huge, from kamikaze to slow ones, along with wave pools and whirlpools. Water temperature ranges from 26 to 36 degrees. In summer the adult day ticket is 19 euros on weekdays and from 25 euros on weekends (it can rise depending on occupancy), while the winter riviera is 25 euros for adults and 20 for children.

Detail Info
Country / region Slovenia, Posavje (Čatež ob Savi)
Day ticket (adult) 19 EUR (summer, weekday) - 25 EUR (winter/weekend)
Water temperature 26-36°C
Key facilities largest water park in the region, many slides, wave pools
From Zagreb ~40 km, 40 min

Who it is ideal for: families with children who want the biggest choice of slides and the nearest large park from Zagreb.

Watch out for: it can get very crowded on weekends and holidays, when the ticket price rises too; bring your ID or passport as you cross the border.

Our opinion: Čatež is often the first choice of Zagreb families, and for good reason. It is closer than most Croatian spas, with enough slides for a whole day. For a day out with children, few can match it.

4. Terme Sveti Martin (Croatia)

Terme Sveti Martin na Muri in Međimurje Photo: Han Sen, Pexels

Terme Sveti Martin na Muri in Međimurje combines year-round wellness with a summer water park. The indoor Temple of Life complex, with about 1,050 square metres of indoor pools, runs all year, while the outdoor MartiLandia water park of about 2,600 square metres, renovated in 2019, offers slides, a children's water playground, three whirlpools and a lazy river. There is also a sauna world and a Healthness and Spa centre.

The thermal spring provides water at 38 degrees, and the pools are heated to 33 to 35 degrees. The full-day adult ticket ranges seasonally from about 17.90 to 18.90 euros on weekdays and 21.90 to 22.90 euros on weekends, so check the current price list before you go. Sveti Martin is about 110 kilometres, an hour and a half's drive.

Detail Info
Country / region Croatia, Međimurje
Day ticket (adult) 17.90-22.90 EUR (varies by season)
Water temperature spring 38°C, pools 33-35°C
Key facilities Temple of Life (year-round), MartiLandia water park, sauna world
From Zagreb ~110 km, 1 h 30 min

Who it is ideal for: a wellness weekend for two, an active break by the Mura river and guests who like a mix of pools and nature.

Watch out for: it is a bit farther than the Zagorje spas, and the water park's price and hours change with the season, so check in advance.

Our opinion: Sveti Martin is our choice for a quiet weekend for two, with the option of cycling and walks along the river. Temple of Life runs in winter too, so it is not tied to summer only. For a couple after a break with a bit of activity, a great mix.

5. Terme Olimia (Slovenia)

Terme Olimia in Slovenian Podčetrtek, right by the Croatian border near Kumrovec, is known for its award-winning wellness. The outdoor Aqualuna thermal park offers ten water attractions and slides such as King Cobra, Kamikaze and Blue Tornado, while the Termalija sauna world has eight saunas. The best known is Wellness Orhidelia with five saunas, repeatedly named the best wellness in Slovenia.

A full-day ticket for the Aqualuna thermal park (for people over 150 cm) costs 19 euros on weekdays and 26 euros on Fridays, weekends and holidays; children 115 to 150 cm get a reduced ticket, and under 115 cm enter free. The spa is about 90 to 100 kilometres, an hour and 20 minutes' drive.

Detail Info
Country / region Slovenia, Podčetrtek
Day ticket (adult) 19 EUR (weekday), 26 EUR (weekend)
Water temperature comfortable bathing (around 28-32°C)
Key facilities Aqualuna park, Termalija (8 saunas), Wellness Orhidelia
From Zagreb ~90-100 km, 1 h 20 min

Who it is ideal for: luxury wellness for two in Orhidelia and lovers of quality saunas.

Watch out for: Orhidelia is a premium zone with a separate price and is intended for adults, so for a family day count on Aqualuna.

Our opinion: We pick Olimia when the goal is wellness, not water slides. Orhidelia is among the loveliest wellness centres in the region and worth experiencing at least once. For a romantic weekend without children, a top choice.

6. Terme 3000 Moravske Toplice (Slovenia)

Terme 3000 in Moravske Toplice, in Slovenian Prekmurje, is unique for its healing black thermal-mineral water that emerges very hot, so the pools are filled with water of special composition. The large thermal park has a range of indoor and outdoor pools, and the highlights are the Aqualoop slide with a 360-degree loop and the Kamikaze slide, 22 metres high.

A full-day thermal-park ticket costs 20.90 euros on weekdays and 23.90 euros on weekends; an afternoon ticket from 4 pm is 18.90 or 21.90 euros, and an evening ticket from 6 pm is 10.90 or 13.90 euros. The price list is valid from 2 March to 31 December 2026. Moravske Toplice is about 150 kilometres, an hour and 40 minutes' drive.

Detail Info
Country / region Slovenia, Prekmurje
Day ticket (adult) 20.90 EUR (weekday), 23.90 EUR (weekend)
Water temperature black thermal-mineral water (pools heated to a comfortable temperature)
Key facilities Aqualoop (360°), Kamikaze (22 m), large thermal park
From Zagreb ~150 km, 1 h 40 min

Who it is ideal for: lovers of healing thermal water and a multi-day break in quieter Prekmurje.

Watch out for: it is a bit farther than the others, so it pays off more for a weekend than a day trip.

Our opinion: We recommend Terme 3000 when you want something different from a classic water park. The black water is a special experience, and Prekmurje is calm and rich in food. For a long weekend, a great combination.

7. Sárvár (Hungary)

Sárvár in western Hungary is a renowned therapeutic spa and the only destination on this list outside Croatia and Slovenia. It offers indoor, semi-open and outdoor experience pools, a sauna world, children's pools with a water playground, as many as 11 large slides and a pirate ship for the youngest. The highlight is two healing waters: one at 43 degrees from a depth of 1,200 metres and another at 83 degrees from 2,000 metres, from which the famous Sárvár thermal crystal salt is produced.

A full-day adult ticket costs about 6,600 forints off-season (converted from forints, around 17 euros) and 8,900 forints in high season on Fridays, weekends and holidays (around 23 euros); children aged 3 to 14 pay 3,600 to 4,500 forints (around 9 to 11 euros). Sárvár is about 220 kilometres, two and a half hours' drive.

Detail Info
Country / region Hungary, Vas (town of Sárvár)
Day ticket (adult) ~17-23 EUR (converted from forints)
Water temperature healing waters 43°C and 83°C, pools tempered
Key facilities 11 slides, sauna world, therapeutic pools, thermal salt
From Zagreb ~220 km, 2 h 30 min

Who it is ideal for: a long weekend, lovers of Hungarian therapeutic spas and those who want something new.

Watch out for: it is the farthest on the list and requires crossing a border and paying in forints; check the exchange rate and opening hours before you go.

Our opinion: Save Sárvár for a long weekend, not a single day. Hungarian spas have a special, therapeutic atmosphere that differs from water parks. Along with a tour of the little town and its castle, a nice mix of relaxation and travel.

How to choose a thermal spa: distance, price and facilities

The right thermal spas for you depend on three things, and the differences between these thermal spas are big.

Distance and time. For a day trip, pick the nearest spas: Čatež (40 min), Aquae Vivae (45 min) and Tuhelj (50 min). Sveti Martin, Olimia and Terme 3000 take an hour and a half to two, so they pay off more for a weekend. For Sárvár (2 h 30 min) plan at least one overnight. For the Slovenian and Hungarian spas, bring an ID card or passport.

Price and ticket type. Adult day tickets range from 17 to 26 euros. On weekdays they are cheaper almost everywhere and less crowded than on weekends. If you stay several days, check hotel packages, as pool entry usually comes with the overnight. For families, check family and children's tickets and the age up to which children enter free.

Facilities and purpose. For children and slides the best are Čatež, Tuhelj and Aquae Vivae. For quiet wellness for two, pick Olimia (Orhidelia) and Sveti Martin. For a special experience there is the black water at Terme 3000 and the therapeutic waters at Sárvár. If the weather is bad, choose spas with a big indoor section like Aquae Vivae.

Conclusion: which thermal spas are worth it most

The best thermal spas for you are chosen by how far you are willing to travel and whether you want fun or quiet. For the nearest big day trip it is hard to go wrong with Čatež, Aquae Vivae or Tuhelj. For quiet wellness for two we pick Olimia and Sveti Martin, and for something special, the black water at Terme 3000 or therapeutic Sárvár. For bad weather, the indoor Aquae Vivae is the safest bet.

If you want... Pick Why
The nearest big day trip Terme Čatež ~40 min, most slides
Everything indoors (winter/rain) Aquae Vivae largest indoor park in the region
Lots to do near Zagreb Terme Tuhelj 8 pools, 6 saunas, ~50 min
A wellness weekend for two Terme Sveti Martin Temple of Life, quiet by the Mura
Luxury wellness Terme Olimia Orhidelia, best in Slovenia
Healing black water Terme 3000 unique thermal-mineral water
A therapeutic spa Sárvár two healing waters, 11 slides

All of these thermal spas reward a weekday visit, so go then if you can, check the current price list on the official site, and, for a wellness weekend, book a hotel in time.

Frequently asked questions

Which are the best thermal spas in Croatia?

For a trip from the Zagreb region, the best-rated Croatian spas are Terme Tuhelj (the largest Water Planet and sauna world in Zagorje), Aquae Vivae Krapinske Toplice (the largest indoor water park in this part of Europe) and Terme Sveti Martin in Međimurje (the Temple of Life complex and the MartiLandia water park). All three offer thermal water, slides and wellness.

How much does entry to a thermal spa cost?

An adult day ticket in the region ranges mostly from 17 to 26 euros (2026). For this guide we picked thermal spas that combine quality facilities, popularity with guests from Croatia and accessibility from the Zagreb region, with an emphasis on Croatian spas plus a few proven Slovenian ones and one Hungarian resort. We verified entry prices, water temperatures, pool sizes and facilities on the official site of each destination. Prices are given for 2026 where officially published; for Terme Sveti Martin, whose price changes by season, we gave a range, and for Sárvár we converted the prices from Hungarian forints into euros.
