The kids' playhouses in this comparison cost from 149.98 euros for the plastic Smoby Life 4 Jahreszeiten to 689.00 euros for the wooden AXI Robin with a slide on Amazon.de. This guide is for parents and grandparents who want to give children aged 18 months to 10 years their own corner of the garden but don't know whether to choose wood or plastic, a house on the ground or one on stilts. The best playhouses of 2027 are the Backyard Discovery Sweetwater as the best wooden house that doesn't need painting (339.00 euros), the AXI Robin as a house on stilts with a slide (689.00 euros) and the Smoby Life Stelzenhaus as the plastic version of the same idea for 414.99 euros. We compared seven models with live prices on 4 November 2026.
Playhouses take up more space than you'd think, so measure your garden before you buy: the smallest house in the comparison needs about 1 x 1.2 m, and the largest ones with a slide and free space around it more than 3 x 4 m.

How to choose a garden playhouse
Wood or plastic
Wooden playhouses are heavier, more stable and blend into a garden better, but the wood needs protecting and the coating renewing every few years. Some come factory-treated, like the Backyard Discovery and AXI, while the Timbela arrives untreated. Plastic playhouses don't need painting, wash off with water and are easier to move or store for winter. They fade in the sun over the years, and light models need anchoring if the garden is exposed to wind.
EN 71 and safety
Playhouses for a private garden count as toys in law, so the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC applies to them for children under 14. Conformity is shown with the EN 71 standard: part 1 covers mechanical and physical properties, part 2 flammability and part 3 the migration of heavy metals (EUR-Lex). For swings, slides, climbing frames and playhouses children climb on at home there is EN 71-8, while playgrounds at nurseries, schools and parks fall under EN 1176 (BSI). On Amazon, look for an explicit EN 71 statement, not just a CE mark.
Free space and the surface under the slide
Playhouses on stilts and slides need space a child can fall into safely. AXI's manual says that parts higher than 60 cm need a fall zone of at least 1.5 m with no hard surface such as concrete or asphalt (AXI manual). Grass, bark or sand are best under and around a slide. Don't put the house next to a fence, wall or tree a child could use to climb onto the roof.
Base and setup
Timbela asks for a level, square base, but not necessarily concrete: lightweight blocks, paving slabs or posts are enough. You need a damp-proof layer between the base and the wood, and at least 45 mm from the base to the first wooden part so the wood doesn't stand in water (Timbela). Don't lay slabs straight onto grass, but onto a layer of compacted gravel. If the spot is windy, anchor the house; the Smoby Stelzenhaus comes with ground anchors.
Wood protection
Timbela asks for all wooden parts to be coated twice on every side with a water-based impregnant before assembly, and for the coating to be renewed about every three years. The roof felt lasts about a year, so the maker recommends bitumen shingles. For playhouses, choose stains marked EN 71-3, which confirms limits on heavy-metal migration, ideally also saliva- and sweat-resistant (DIN 53160) (Remmers). That mark only covers heavy metals, not the safety of the house as a whole.
Do you need a permit in Croatia
No. Article 3 of the Croatian Ordinance on Simple and Other Buildings and Works says that, among other things, stable children's toys can be put up on the plot of an existing building without a building permit or main project (Narodne novine). The ordinance has been amended since 2017, so for larger houses check the consolidated text and your municipality's spatial plan.
1. Backyard Discovery Sweetwater
Photo: Backyard Discovery, Amazon
The Backyard Discovery Sweetwater, made of cedar, arrives factory-stained in white and anthracite, so children can move in the same day. Cedar is naturally resistant to rot, and at 118 x 107 x 140 cm it fits a smaller garden too. Amazon.de lists an age of 2 to 10 years and says the house was developed to DIN EN 71 requirements.
Children can serve through the wide front window, and toy sink, stove and cordless phone come with the house, so children have a "shop" or "restaurant" right away. The panels come partly assembled, and Amazon lists assembly in under an hour. The house has neither a veranda nor a slide, and a floor isn't confirmed.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Material | cedar, factory-stained |
| Size | 118 x 107 x 140 cm |
| Age | 2-10 years (Amazon.de) |
| Extras | sink, stove, phone, serving window |
| Standard | developed to DIN EN 71 (Amazon.de) |
| Assembly | under 1 hour (Amazon.de) |
| Price | €339.00 |
Pros: rot-resistant cedar, no painting needed, quick assembly, kitchen toys included, compact.
Cons: no veranda or slide, floor not confirmed, pricier than pine houses of a similar size.
Our opinion: The Sweetwater is the playhouse we'd recommend to most families. For 339 euros you get wood you don't have to coat and a play house that keeps both two-year-olds and eight-year-olds busy.
2. AXI Robin
Photo: AXI, Amazon
The AXI Robin is a house on stilts with a veranda, steps and a 118 cm slide. The platform is at 58 cm, low enough for two-year-olds to climb. The wood is FSC hemlock, factory-treated with a water-based stain, which AXI says makes it practically maintenance-free.
The house takes up 177 x 264 cm and is 203 cm tall, with a 91 x 104 cm floor inside. The windows open and are clear. Retailers list a 150 kg load capacity and a weight of 98 kg, and AXI states conformity with EN 71. On top of the 2.64 m width, allow for free space in front of the slide exit.

| Material | FSC hemlock, water-based stain |
| Size | 177 x 264 x 203 cm |
| Platform | 58 cm |
| Slide | 118 cm |
| Inside | 91 x 104 cm |
| Age | 2+ |
| Standard | EN 71 |
| Price | €689.00 |
Pros: house and slide in one, low platform for younger children, factory-protected wood, FSC.
Cons: most expensive in the comparison, 2.64 m wide plus the zone around the slide, small inside.
Our opinion: The Robin is for children who climb more than they cook. If you have the space and don't want to buy a slide separately, 689 euros gets you both.
3. Timbela M501B
Photo: Timbela, Amazon
The heaviest and sturdiest house in the comparison is the Timbela M501B: 148 kg of FSC-certified Nordic pine and spruce, 19 mm walls and 18 mm floorboards included in the kit. It is 205 cm tall, stands on 130 x 164 cm (146 x 181 cm with the roof overhang), has a small front veranda and about 1.1 m² of floor space inside. The 57 x 100 cm door and 37 x 39 cm windows have plexiglass instead of glass.
The house arrives untreated, and the maker asks for two coats of water-based impregnant on every side before assembly, which is a good job for the whole family. Assembly takes 4 to 6 hours with two people. The roof load is rated at 30 kg/m², and the bitumen felt on the roof lasts about a year, so it's sensible to replace it with shingles straight away. Timbela states EN 71 but not an age.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Material | Nordic pine and spruce, FSC |
| Size | 130 x 164 x 205 cm |
| Weight | 148 kg |
| Walls, floor | 19 mm, 18 mm |
| Treatment | untreated, 2 coats before assembly |
| Assembly | 4-6 hours, 2 people |
| Standard | EN 71 |
| Price | €687.00 |
Pros: sturdiest in the comparison, floor included, 205 cm tall, thick walls, FSC wood.
Cons: needs impregnating and painting, long assembly, short-lived roof felt, no slide.
Our opinion: The Timbela is for a large garden and children who will use the house for years. You'll feel the wall thickness and the 18 mm floor after the first winter, but plan a painting day before assembly.
4. KidKraft Modern Outdoor
Photo: KidKraft, Amazon
The KidKraft Modern Outdoor (00182) is a modern-looking wooden house with a sloped roof and large windows, for children from three. A picnic table with two benches is fixed to the side, and the kit includes a toy grill with a lid and utensils, a mailbox with a flag, a chalkboard and curtains. It measures about 178 x 124 x 158 cm.
According to the Amazon.de listing, the softwood is factory-impregnated, and KidKraft says the house meets European and German toy safety standards without naming the exact standard. Parts are pre-drilled and partly assembled (EZ Kraft). There's no sink or stove inside; the "kitchen" is the grill outside.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Material | softwood, factory-impregnated |
| Size | about 178 x 124 x 158 cm |
| Age | 3+ |
| Extras | grill, table with 2 benches, mailbox, chalkboard |
| Assembly | pre-drilled panels (EZ Kraft) |
| Price | €329.99 |
Pros: most role-play equipment, modern look, lots of light, easy assembly.
Cons: exact standard not stated, the table widens it to about 1.8 m, no kitchen inside.
Our opinion: For children who play "barbecue with guests", the KidKraft gives the most for 330 euros. Adults will use the table and benches for coffee while the children grill plastic sausages.
5. Smoby Life Stelzenhaus
Photo: Smoby, Amazon
The Smoby Life Stelzenhaus (810802) is a plastic house on stilts with a veranda, a ladder and a 1.5 m slide. The slide has a garden hose connection, so in summer it becomes a water slide; the hose isn't included. It measures 243 x 160 x 197 cm, and the plastic is at least 60 % recycled.
Smoby states conformity with EN 71-1, -2, -3 and -8, so including the part for activity toys. The maximum load is only 50 kg, so the house isn't for older children or for adults climbing after them. Ground anchors are included, and you should fit them because plastic is lighter than wood.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Material | plastic, at least 60 % recycled |
| Size | 243 x 160 x 197 cm |
| Slide | 1.5 m, hose connection |
| Age | 2+ |
| Maximum load | 50 kg |
| Standard | EN 71-1, -2, -3, -8 (Smoby) |
| Price | €414.99 |
Pros: house on stilts with no wood maintenance, water slide, confirmed EN 71-8, anchors included.
Cons: 50 kg maximum load, plastic fades over the years, must be anchored.
Our opinion: The Stelzenhaus is the AXI Robin for people who don't want to deal with wood maintenance at all, and it costs 274 euros less. In the heat, the water slide will be the favourite part of the garden.
6. Little Tikes Picnic on the Patio
Photo: Little Tikes, Amazon
The Little Tikes Picnic on the Patio is a plastic house for the youngest, from 18 months to 5 years. On Amazon.de it's sold under the generic name "Gartenspielhaus", but the description (20 accessories, doorbell, table and benches, 186 cm long) matches this model. A table with two benches is built into the side, and the kit includes 20 accessories, from dishes to play food, and a phone.
The door has an electronic doorbell with sounds, which needs three AAA batteries that aren't included. The house weighs 30 kg and measures 186 x 94 x 121 cm, with 109 cm of headroom inside. The plastic washes off with a garden hose. No standard is listed on Amazon.de, and the recommended age only goes up to 5.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Material | plastic |
| Size | 186 x 94 x 121 cm |
| Weight | 30 kg |
| Age | 18 months - 5 years |
| Extras | table, 2 benches, doorbell, phone, 20 accessories |
| Batteries | 3 x AAA, not included |
| Price | €162.59 |
Pros: for children from 18 months, lots of accessories, built-in table and benches, easy to clean.
Cons: recommended age only up to 5, batteries not included, no standard listed on Amazon.de.
Our opinion: For a child of one and a half, this is the first playhouse: low, rounded and full of little details. If your child is already at nursery, choose something that will still be big enough in three years.
7. Smoby Life 4 Jahreszeiten
Photo: Smoby, Amazon
For a small garden or patio there's the Smoby Life 4 Jahreszeiten (Four Seasons), one of the smallest and the cheapest house in the comparison. It measures 103 x 122 cm and is 143 cm tall to the top of the weather vane. At 13.7 kg it's easy to move or store in the garage for winter.
The house has a weather vane with an anemometer, a rain gauge, wind chimes and a learning board where children track the seasons, weather and temperature. It has a door and three large windows, and the plastic is at least 50 % recycled and made in France. Smoby doesn't state a standard on the product page. It's light, so in a windy spot it needs securing.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Material | plastic, at least 50 % recycled |
| Size | 103 x 122 x 143 cm |
| Weight | 13.7 kg |
| Age | 2+ |
| Extras | weather vane, rain gauge, wind chimes, board |
| Price | €149.98 |
Pros: cheapest, fits on a patio, educational extras, easy to move and store.
Cons: small for older children, light so it needs securing against wind, standard not stated.
Our opinion: If you only have a patio or a corner of lawn, the 4 Jahreszeiten is the best choice: small, light, and you can store it away in October. The weather vane and rain gauge turn play into a small weather station.
Conclusion: which playhouse to choose?
For most families the best choice is the Backyard Discovery Sweetwater: wooden, factory-stained and with kitchen toys for 339.00 euros. Children who love climbing will get the most from the AXI Robin, and parents who don't want to maintain wood get the same in plastic with the Smoby Life Stelzenhaus. The Timbela M501B is for a large garden and a long life, the KidKraft for role play, the Little Tikes for children under three and the Smoby 4 Jahreszeiten for a small patio. Choose playhouses by the space in your garden and your child's age first, and by looks second.

Frequently asked questions
Is a wooden or plastic playhouse better?
A wooden one is more stable, lasts longer and looks better in the garden, but the wood needs coating every few years. A plastic one needs no maintenance, washes off with water and is easy to move, but it fades over the years and light models need anchoring. For a small garden and the youngest children, plastic is more practical.
What does EN 71 on a playhouse mean?
EN 71 is the European standard for toy safety. Part 1 covers mechanical properties, part 2 flammability and part 3 heavy metals in materials and coatings. For houses children climb on, swings and slides for home use there is part EN 71-8.
What age are playhouses for?
Plastic playhouses like the Little Tikes Picnic on the Patio start at 18 months, and most wooden ones at 2 or 3 years. Houses on stilts with a slide are usually from 2 years if the platform is low, like the 58 cm on the AXI Robin. Makers rarely give an upper limit: Backyard Discovery lists up to 10 years for the Sweetwater, and Little Tikes up to 5 for the Picnic on the Patio.
What base does a playhouse need?
A wooden playhouse needs a level base of slabs, lightweight blocks or posts, with a damp-proof layer under the wood and at least 45 mm clearance from the ground. Concrete isn't necessary. Under the slide and parts higher than 60 cm, leave a soft surface such as grass, bark or sand.
Do you need a permit for a playhouse in Croatia?
No. The Ordinance on Simple and Other Buildings and Works allows stable children's toys on the plot of an existing building without a building permit or main project. For very large houses, check the consolidated text of the ordinance and the municipality's spatial plan.
How do you protect a wooden playhouse?
Before assembly, coat every part twice on all sides with a water-based impregnant, and renew the coating about every three years. Choose stains marked EN 71-3. It's a good idea to replace the roof felt with bitumen shingles because it lasts about a year.
How long does assembly take?
It depends on the size. The Backyard Discovery Sweetwater goes together in under an hour according to Amazon, because the panels are partly assembled. The large Timbela M501B needs 4 to 6 hours with two people, plus time for impregnating before assembly.
How we chose
The playhouses in this comparison were chosen by material, age, size, equipment, stated standard, wood protection, assembly effort and price. We shortlisted 15 models available on Amazon.de and checked every ASIN through the Amazon API. Data comes from the websites and manuals of Backyard Discovery, AXI, Timbela, KidKraft, Smoby and Little Tikes and from Amazon.de listings. Safety rules are from Directive 2009/48/EC and the EN 71 standards, and permit rules from the Croatian Ordinance on Simple and Other Buildings and Works. Prices are live Amazon.de prices on 4 November 2026. We did not test the houses ourselves.
